This trade looks much much better from the Canucks side of things lol, but they are a team with an abundance of wingers who will need to get paid, so giving up a known entity in Garland who is locked probably isn't the move even if they wanted Nylander, and Garland probably isn't what the Leafs need anyways if they are looking to resign Miller+Bunting.

Giving up Niemela+Sandin would would be a mistake for the Leafs future on defense, but let's just remove Garland and Niemela from the trade. Add Hoglander as the cost controlled option, and then balance the trade from their, Vancouver retaining on Miller makes no sense as it doesn't help Toronto in this trade.

Miller+Hoglander+Rathbone/Poolman for Nylander+Sandin+a pick is probably a deal that makes more sense. Then can add Kerfoot and Dickinson to make the cap work. Maybe Rathbone can be traded by Van for Lundkvist, all I know is you can't just LTIR Poolman.

Edit: Looking at the cap, there's going to be like 3.35-4.35m going to Vancouver if it's just Miller+Hoglander+Poolman for Nylander+Kerfoot+Sandin, so there isn't really a deal to be made here unless Myers is moved in a separate deal for picks.

Rangers can’t afford sandin and are already pretty set on young LDs

What might work is:

Miller 2.625m (retention must be done by a 3rd team) + Rathbone for Kakko 2.2m+Lundkvist 0.925m (the team that needs to offset the trade sends a pick to the team retaining on Miller who also gets Dickinson 2.65m) Van: -0.65m (NYR will have ~0.6m in cap space)

Poolman 2.5m+Hoglander ~0.9m for Sandin (assuming 2.5m)+futures
Van: at least 1.0125m in cap (need a 4C). (Leafs move Kerfoot and Holl for waiver exempt prospects/picks or FCs at worst and will have 0.6m in cap space)

What do you think of the below proposal for the Rangers while considering long-term implications of giving up Kakko for Miller?

Fair enough he has 2 years now, so it wouldn't be a good idea, especially since there is no clear way for them to resign Miller.

What about Chytil+Lundkvist for Miller (50%) straight up, with NYR sending a pick to a 3rd team for retention?

You have to include a 2023 first if you dont want Vancouver to hangup immediately

Maybe, but it's probably going to be a 2nd from NY to a 3rd team retain 2.625m since the trade would be happening now.

If a Allvin gets a 1st or a conditional 1st out of it, or nothing more, I think that just comes down to which GM negotiates the better deal for their side.

The new deal for miller makes it impossible for the rangers to fit this under the cap.

Even if they could the new deal primarily shows that he's not going anywhere for the next 4 years at least most likely.
