Team: 2022-23 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2022
Published: Sep. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I’m a diehard Philadelphia Flyers fan. The first vivid memories I have from watching games date back to when I was eight- in the 2011-12 season. Funny enough, that was the last season The Flyers were even fringe contenders. Things went downhill that offseason and continued on a trend of mediocrity until the 2019-20 season.

January 2020 was one of the most memorable months in recent memory and the team was absolutely rolling. Then the COVID pause hit, and the team was never the same.

Flash forward to now, where we sit at a true rock bottom in franchise history. A desperate GM, a revolting fanbase, an organization with no planned direction, bad contracts, no cap space, and no high end talent.

With Ryan Ellis’ career likely over and Sean Couturier out for the time being, this already depleted team is backed into a corner and not even new head coach John Tortorella could convert this team into a contender. We are in perfect position to rebuild rather quickly thanks to the insanely deep 2023 draft flooded with elite potential.

So that’s exactly what we have here.
Trades
1.
PHI
  1. Lucic, Milan
  2. 2023 1st round pick (CGY)
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Philadelphia takes on less than two months of Lucic to acquire a second 1st rounder in a very deep draft, in addition to a 3rd rounder the following year.
CGY
  1. Konecny, Travis
Additional Details:
Move made close to, or during, the 2023 Trade Deadline. CGY sacrifices a fan favorite on an expiring deal to create additional cap space for the much younger, more skillful winger in Konecny. By dealing Zadorov and/or Kylington, enough cap space should be created to both extend Weegar and keep Konecny as Huberdeau’s extension kicks in.
2.
PHI
  1. Mikkola, Niko
  2. 2023 1st round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
Philly retains half of Travis Sanheim’s salary for the remainder of the season and acquires a third 1st rounder in the upcoming stacked draft.
STL
  1. Sanheim, Travis ($2,337,500 retained)
Additional Details:
St. Louis gets added support on the blueline with a very solid second pair defenseman who is still relatively young at 26. With Philadelphia retaining half of his salary, St. Louis gets Sanheim at a very cheap cap hit- especially for a rental.
3.
PHI
  1. 2023 5th round pick (MIN)
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
The Flyers bid farewell to one of the last remaining players from the Holmgren era (although he served two stints) for a pair of mid-pack draft picks.
MIN
  1. van Riemsdyk, James ($3,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
With Minnesota making a playoff push, they go out and acquire an established 20-goal scorer in James van Riemsdyk at half price to provide additional offense.
4.
PHI
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (TBL)
TBL
  1. Braun, Justin ($500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Tampa Bay, clearly still in their Stanley Cup window, pays a low third round pick in the upcoming draft to acquire reliable bottom pair defenseman Justin Braun at the insanely low cap hit of $500,000. A commodity for any contender wanting to bolster blueline depth for a playoff run.

I think the value on these deals are good, but you could get more if the players were traded to better locations. A team like Ottawa may be willing to give up more than the blues did for a 50% retained Sanheim, for example. My islanders could totally be willing to give up more for Konecny if we are contending at the TDL. Pretty good overall though.

I think if Tampa is in need for a depth dman at the tdl, something around Braun for a 3rd or 4th could work if Tampa is able to make the cap work.

Hm. I figured losing Lucic + Kylington/Zadorov would be enough (add in Dube if needed)

Yeah I completely agree, I just didn’t really know what teams to look at outside of the playoff picture (OTT or BUF for example) so I stuck with the more competitive teams
