I think Severson for Garland fits as a nice 1-for-1 hockey trade. If we change to Marino, NJD probably adds a bit. Nothing major.

Severson has asked for max term over top dollar. So it may be 7-8 years.

I was hoping for a Garland for Marino trade with PIT and was very disappointed that we didn't get him.

If he signs 8 years x $5 million, that would awesome. I think Sanheim/Weegar deals of 8 years at $6.25 million is probably about where he lands if he gets full-term.

4-5 years x $7.5 million would be my bet. I know there was some speculation that he wanted around $7 million over the summer…anything more come out on what his ask was?

I heard he was offered and rejected 8x6.5m. If I'm Fitz I don't settle for anything less than 6 years. If he repeats his performance from last year I can see him commanding 8-9

What if Pittsburgh didn't want anything Vancouver had? They got a defenseman back for Marino and I doubt any defenseman the Canucks could offer has the same appeal as Smith

I think Marino is more important to this team than Garland would be. A big defensively focused defenseman is what this team needs, not another small forward.
Plus I really do think the offense is there for the devils even if it hasn't been evident through 2 games

If Severson wants to stay, we need to make room for Nemec on the right side. If we don't, and we play Severson on the left, Bahl loses a roster spot. Bahl is a big defensively focused defenseman on a contract a quarter the cost of Marino's. Extending Severson and not trading Marino would put us in a huge cap crunch if a single of the players on that roster need a bigger contract than I gave them.

It's also disingenuous to dismiss Garland as just another small forward. The guy is electric, and having him on a third line is insane depth.
