If JR had hired me as GM last season

Created by: AusCanuck
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 25, 2022
Published: Oct. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Consider this a re-tool

*For clarification: I am saying that I would have accepted the best offer for JT Miller at the 2022 TDL (using the reported NYR offer here with a 2nd for 50% retention), would have matched the Penguins' reported ask for Marino, wouldn't have signed Mikheyev and wouldn't have made the Chicago trade.

You would have traded JT Miller for Filip Chytil?

    (Chytil + Lundqvist + 1st)

I would have taken the best offer at the trade deadline

I doubt they would have been able to pull all of those moves off. Assets aren't evaluated based on a black and white numbers scale

The only moves are accepting the widely reported NYR offer for JT Miller and matching the NJD offer for Marino (I think Rathbone and Ty Smith are pretty equivocal, was proposing to trade Garland at the time)

The big difference is not signing another middle-6 veteran to a $5M contract and not trading away another 2nd round pick

I see nothing wrong with the Mikheyev signing in a vacuum, and holding onto a 2nd round pick isn't worth the consequences of not being cap compliant

The immediate reaction to the Mikheyev contract was a big oof, the Canucks don't need more money tied up in middle 6 forwards. That money should have been used on the defence instead, and would have made the Chicago trade unnecessary. There's no need spending to the cap for a team that isn't a contender, that cap space might come in handy later

I agree with your AGM completely. I remember hearing both those trades were passed up by Vancouver, there was lots of talk regarding the NYR trade but there was also some insider talk that Vancouver passed on a Marino trade that had the same pick as NJ but included Rathbone instead of Smith.
I have been saying for months I think Vancouver really needed a retool and after 8 years of trying to complete one (when they should have rebuilt) they finally had the assets to do it (Miler, Horvat etc) and they decided to try and go all in when they didn’t have the pieces or assets. The most frustrating part for me is if they wanted to go all in, which they shouldn’t have, they should have went all in and made the Marino trade. The No plan plan continues…

They Canucks didn't have enough players like Mikheyev, that's what you're missing

Again, you're overlooking some contextual aspects of why management maneuvered the cap the way they did

Never said the cap situation is better than the alternative, but that doesn't mean bringing in a guy like Mikheyev wasn't well thought out
