Lineup for playoffs - Trades I want to see during the year

Created by: Mattkenn
Team: 2022-23 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 2, 2022
Published: Nov. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
REBUILD IS OVER - I want to see the sens go for it and be willing to trade their 1st rounders

Note: The sens can't take on salary for next year as it should already be a cap crunch... They should be looking at UFA's or Cheap players with term.

Trade 1: Toews - Use Giroux trade from last year as Template

He can replace Norris on 2nd line during the season and then slide down to create an Elite 4th line during the playoffs.

Trade 2: Copying Tampa - Overpay to get an OK player with cheap contract with term

The underlying numbers on Mayo are not great but he plays for a terrible team which makes it looks much worse than it is. He is a coach's dream. Made team canada at the worlds. He is the Type of depth player you need on a winning team. Defense first guy. Plays PK. Perfect playing style to complement Branny, Sanderson and even chabot. He can grow with this team over the next couple years.

Ritchie is basically a throw in for a 3rd round pick... Depth that allows Kastelic and Kelly to play in Belleville's playoff run.

Toews is not waiving his NMC for Ottawa.

And both of these trades are terrible for Ottawa.

You're not getting any good value out of them whatsoever.

Say's who?

This is what the teams will be asking for these players. Ottawa should pay up.. earlier than not in Toews case because they need someone to replace Norris if they want to be in the playoff race.

First of all, we most definitely should not be trading first round picks right now.

Second, those are awful trades for Ottawa. Mayo and Ritchie have little value and Toews is not worth anywhere near that much.

Just because we're not in the rebuild anymore doesn't mean we should rush to give away first round picks for average to below average assets.

Wins are worth more than picks for Ottawa right now... especially with imminent sale of the team.

Toews is worth pretty much exactly what Giroux was worth last year.... Mayo is a fine player, not worth a 1st on face value... but his contract is one of a kind contract in the NHL right now.

No thanks, I'm not paying a first, a second and a fourth for a guy who will play at most a half a season with the Sens then walk in the offseason.

I would potentially be open to trading the first, but only if the player coming back is a top-four D with term.

You are paying a 1st and formenton for a guy that will allow you to get in the payoffs...

The 2nd is for Zaitsev dump and the 4th is for salary retention.

Well Mayo has term ... and has potential to be top 4.

The guys that are already top 4 carry too much cap... Have you even taken a look at our imminent cap crunch next year??

People need to stop with the Chycrun crap there is no way we can fit him under the cap next year without heavily affecting our depth and goaltending.

Would be a waste to trade for Toews only to end up sticking him on the 4th line during the playoffs; that's when he really comes to life as a player.

I'd have fun watching him destroy other teams 4th line... Also playing PP and PK ... Special teams is where a lot of cups are won

Correct, that is the only trade the sens are looking at, maybe goaltending but we have to see how a Forsberg/Talbot tandem does.

This team isn't going to panic to make the playoff this year, they have a great young core and don;t need to panic replace Norris, Pinto will be fine there.

Lastly, I think the fact Kastelic just got 2 year extension shows he is staying put as 4C and 3C if needed, he and Kelley can ride together for years.

I know people want to rush them into the playoffs, it would be good, but also with the likes of Grieg, Boucher, JDB, Thompson, and Sogard still in AHL they can take their time.

Well, I'm not trading a first round pick in a loaded draft for someone who might possibly become a top-four defenceman. I would consider trading a second and a prospect for him.

Since when is Toews going to solve all our problems?

The team is fine right now on paper, if anything we need a new coach.

Depending on the prospect, I prefer sending out the first. Prospects are developing well and each will have a chance to contribute during the competitive window. I prefer sending out a pick that is further away from panning out.

Anyways, my point is we can't afford taking on Chycrun, Dumba or any other current top 4 D. https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/649409?post_id=3652014

Sending out a 1st for a cheap, long contracts has proven to be a good strategy for Tampa, why not sens?

Fine. But losing Norris hurts our chances.. We need another center to remain competite all year long in tough eastern conferance.

Could go after someone other than Toews that will not cost a 1st... but he remains the best center potentially available.

I just want to see this team get some experience in the playoffs... It will be good for the players, the fans and the new owners!
