Nylander has comparables for his contract, as mentioned by others, it wouldn't have decreased. If anything he would have had leverage to get overpaid.

JVR was getting a significant raise either way, probably 6m+ (edit: he was reportedly willing to sign for 6mx5 or 6).

I think it would have decreased their prices tags because Nylander is technically the highest paid player on the team and JVR would have resigned with the leafs at $5.5M x 8yrs but the leafs had their eyes on Tavares. Nylander probably saw Tavares and said wait if you are handing out money I want more. Matthews would later do the same and compare his price tag with Tavares saying he is worth more than him and you, the leafs, have shown you are willing to pay that. Then Marner would go on and compare himself to Matthews.
