It's possible but I don't think it's likely unless Canucks are willing to take back a similar contract. Canucks also have a need on the PK, 3C, and cap space which is why I like Mittelstadt as a target. Particularly if Horvat leaves but even with him here I wouldn't mind a more secure 3C so that you can play Miller on Horvat's wing as they have been really good together in the small sample size this year.

Moving Garland for Mittelstadt gets a young 3C with upside that can play PK (not to discredit the flaws in Mittelstadt's game) but it also creates 2.5mil in additional capspace. That additional cap space can go towards acquiring a true top 4D via trade or free agency in the summer.

Honestly, if Horvat is gone, they would be fools not to put Miller there as the 2C. Having him on the wing is a luxury that they can't afford with them needing to rework their defense. I see why you would want to free up the cap, but I think they are better off pursuing a 3C in free agency next summer (if Studnicka can't) and acquire (with Garland) an expiring top 4 RD or one with term, so that they don't go end up leaving free agency next year empty-handed.

I think with Mittlestadt, if Horvat is gone, they will just force him into that 2C spot and put Miller on his wing. His cap hit is low enough for it not to be a huge issue, but I don't see any place for Studnicka then.

Stud has played mostly 4th line wing since coming to Van and that line has looked really good together. Miller will definitely play 2/1C if Horvat leaves but if Horvat stays that gives them the option to put him on the wing giving us a more dynamic top 6. Personally I like Mittelstadt at 3C. I really don't think Garland fetches a top4 D and especially not a right handed one.

The additional cap space from a garland moves increases the chance that they don't miss on a top 4 D in free agency.

Fair enough, I guess if they are expecting Horvat to sign, then moving Garland for Mittelstadt would make a lot of sense. I was going off the assumption that Horvat is traded, so I was more thinking about them missing out in FA due to better suitors and not insufficient cap space.

I hope they do make some moves, was disappointed that they didn't make any this off-season after I expected at least one of Miller or Garland to get traded.

I hope you understand that playing on the PK doesn't mean you are good defensively. Miller is on our PK and he is country miles worse defensively than Garland. If you look up Mittlestadts advanced stats, they are pretty bad. He is way below average defensively whereas Garland is actually above average defensively. Not even close whatsoever. I hate to say it but your takes have been getting very questionable recently

I don't think you want mittelstadt as a 3c. He hasn't got a physical bone in his body, and if you are planning on having your third line be a checking line, all I can say is those poor advanced stats are actually an improvement. I don't know what his place in the league is- he's not a top 6 center on a playoff team, and a lot of gms wouldn't prize his game as a third line center. I suppose if you want a 40-50 point 3rd line (scoring not checking) center that you give 80% offensive zone starts to...I'm not saying it couldn't work, sometimes you have to play the cards in your hand, but I wouldn't wanna build that way.

This is a pretty reasonable trade for both sides actually, Buffalo would love what garland brings, vancouver needs a legit 3rd line centre to keep miller on the wing

Mittlestadt is worse than Miller at everything. Even defensively, Miller is better.
