How I think opening night next season will go

Created by: KDev
Team: 2023-24 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 9, 2022
Published: Dec. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Key takeaways:

1. Miles Wood prices himself out of NJ. As much as I want him to stay out, paying a 4th liner north of 4mil is to much, I have a feeling he will get around what Blake Coleman got.
2. Graves and Severson also find themselves off the team. I expect Graves to take no less than a 5 year deal considering he is already 27. The Devils can’t offer the term he is most likely looking for when we have so many young guys ready to go.
3. Gristyuk and Shak make the move from the KHL to the NHL. Gristyuk has 22 points in 39 games, 12 in his last 10,. Muk 13 in 37 but his defense has seen a significant improvement. Shak has also made it very clear his goal is to make the NHL next year. They both fins themselves on the opening night roster but this is not to say they might not be sent down to the AHL if they are struggling.
4. Foote gets his opportunity to stay with the big club. He and ZAR fight for the 4th LW spot to play with McLeod and Bastian.
5. With Muk showing up, there is less pressure on Nemec to come in and perform, however he is the 1st defensive call up barring injuries.
6. This team is very young. But that is because we have so many young players ready to take the next step.
The Rookies: Gristyuk, Muk, L Hughes, Schmid.
7. We have a ton of cap space with this roster while I don’t see us losing much of what was successful this season. If they wanted to go for a huge add they can. We have the picks, prospects and young players available to make pretty much any kind of deal work.

This is a very likely scenario, though I think Bahl will be kept and he would alternate with Smith in the lineup

I agree with this. Bahl is more ready and would rather him even be a 6/7th D than be shipped out for scratch off tickets. I could see him as a part of a bigger package for a more "now" piece. I do think we end up getting a veteran RHD that can babysit Luke as I don't think he should be expected to be top 4 out of the gate.

This is just a step back to a years ago. Stop trying to rely on rookies/ unproven players to play prominent roles ie Zacha, Boqvist, Kuokkanen, Smith, Studenic, Butcher, Gusev, Merkley, etc.

Also Haula might even get a raise. He has been defacto 2C since Hughes cannot win faceoffs.

Grit is the only guy in that top 9 I see easily replacing. I would LOVE for Mercer to be a 3C, but I do think he goes to the wing. If our LWs are Palat, Bratt, Sharangovich, and RWs are Mercer, Holtz, Zetterlund....I am totally fine with that. I would however prefer a 3C upgrade, I just don't know who it would be.

Where I really don't agree with your argument is comparing Mercer, Holtz, Zetterlund to any of those weak prospects/signings from above. It is a step back to a point yes, but it is also way wiser use of the cap.

I'd be fine with Haula replacing Wood on the 4th line if he came back at a decent cost. The key thing is I am not open to long term deals for guys that don't have at least 2nd line talent. I do believe Sharangovich could be a 2nd liner, but I'd go term as he would be solid depth.

So in the end, give me a veteran 3C, and at least one more veteran RHD that is on a 1-2yr deal. Beyond that, I love the core.

I brought Haula back to be the 3C if needed. Again this is just opening night roster, so Gritsyuk would probably move out if Haula is needed. I went vet LD simply because I was thinking of solid partners for the rookie but you make a good point in needing a bet RD in case that rookie isn’t ready. Our core is just so deep it’s incredible. I do think this roster is a step back from this year but at the end of the day we gotta see what the young guys can do make choices as to what to do with them. Foote, Thompson, Walsh, Bahl and Ohotiyuk to are all young guys we need to figure out what to do with whether that’s trading them or giving them their shot.
