Description
nice and easy, one trade, that's it

- konency is a strong top-six winger who isn't really gonna fit with... whatever Philly is doing going forward. three years is a reasonable term and while adding another non-cheap contract is not ideal for Toronto, he's the exact kinda top six forward that would fit perfectly in with the core four, basically a better 'peak bunting' and if we can't afford the latter because of the former, then so be it
- laughton is the perfect 3C for this team - he can play both PP and PK, good for like 30 points a year, and can actually play centre reliably - plus Horvat or O'Reilly are going to be wayyyyy too pricey in terms of acquisition cost - laughton also has a decent contract with term, so in a worse case scenario where kampf is asking for a ton this summer, we have a ready-made replacement right there

going the other way
- kerf & engvall are both a) roster players/warm bodies who can fill the vacant holes in the lineup and can subsequently be re-flipped for additional assets or re-signed depending on whatever fletcher decides to do. kerf & engvall are just one season removed from 51 & 35 point seasons respectively (konecny and laughton were 52 & 30, in comparison), before someone claims they have 'no value'
- robertson gets a lot of flack, but he's still extremely young and talented, and when toronto only gives him bottom six minutes with unskilled players its no wonder he isn't able to flourish - philly can let him run the show and take advantage of his situation, and the goals that will come with it
- abruzzese is a decent centre prospect, but you can replace him with any sort of prospect in a similar tier such as Tverberg (potential), Steeves (NHL-ready), or SDA (mix)
- personally would love to hold onto our 2023 1st, and our 2024 one will probably be higher (given our lofty placement rn - OTT's 3rd this year is on pace to be a late 2nd, as a nice sweetener
- no retention from Philly allows us to not pay a ludicrous amount

then we sign Knies (ideally for line two, but you can shuffle him out with any of the third line and it works just as well - creates a lot of matchup opportunities too) and we're golden. a strong top nine, an above-average defence at full health, room for two scratches and the key problem (depth scoring) addressed. all of that with just over $1200 to spare :) pLaN tHe PaRaDe

This ensures we lose Bunting and likely Nylander. We can't afford to take on long term money

well, couple of things
- bunting is a great player right now because of his contract. he is however not the kind of guy (secondary scorer reliant on playing with better players) you commit term to, and that's the only way we get him at a reasonable AAV. if he signs like a 3x3 then sure, i'm sure we can figure out a way around that, but i would be surprised to see him back + with Knies in the fold he could easily (hopefully) slot into that role as well. Laughton in also means Kampf, while i love him, could leave and that's another 1.5M to spend + maybe Holl's 2M too
- nylander will be fine - he's making 7M right now, the cap is supposed to start jumping up more significantly in two years, and won't honestly command more 10 - that's just a 3M rise, and with Murray, Muzzin (though he's likely Robidas Island-bound at this point), and Brodie all up in two years as well we should have enough for him + Matthews' raise, along with the young Swedes. it's not going to be easy mind you, but i have faith that Dubas & Pridham will continue to find a good balance

Ah yes, the old "any depth guy from a different team is definitely better than the guys we have accomplishing much better results" sort of post. Laughton isn't nearly as good as Kampf and I doubt Kampf costs 3 million. Bunting may have to go but spending 5 million on Konecny who also is a player who'll ride coattails is a waste of money and these assets.

Yep it might be Leafs better this year, but it's way too much long term cap for the Leafs to take on. The would be sure to lose Kampf and Bunting next summer and more.

at 5v5, Laughton has nearly the exact same play-driving stats as Kampf despite half his S% and an unfortunate PDO, has three of his last four season with more points than Kampf's career-high 26, and sits a whopping one point behind Kampf while playing on both special teams. His faceoff percentage is weaker but still decent, he has 4x the hits Kampf does in four less games, and if that matters to you, he's also a "local boy",ditto konency. what matters is we get both Laughton and Kampf for this year, which is the key part, then in a worst case we sacrifice a bit of defensive ability for better offensive ability moving forward with Laughton over Kampf. hell, i'd rather let Holl move at the end of the year and allocate some of that 2M for Kampf and now you get both!

As for Konecny, don't know who you've been watching but being a PPG player on *these* Flyers is the complete opposite of 'riding coattails', esp given his linemates and teammates over the years. i'd rather him at 5M than Bunting at 4M for the next three years + we know konency can perform without Matthews and Marner, but we also know bunting can't. and if you don't think there are teams that will give Kampf 3M with a rising cap after seeing what he's done then you must not have seen the parade of former Leaf FAs get paid.

as for the assets required, i'd far rather do this than spend this and more to get 20 games of O'Reilly at his lowest point or Horvat post-shooting percentage downer - at least you get to keep the quality moving forward.

as a whole, the point of the deal is mostly to win this year, without sacrificing all our best prospects. no more adding UFAs who will walk at the cost of assets, but instead adding two quality players with term means we can stay competitive moving forward too - losing Bunting/maybe Kampf will hurt, but that's the price we pay. people thought losing Hyman would cripple us and we added Bunting, then people thought Campbell leaving was a dagger before getting Samsonov for a third of his price. players will come and go, but good players at reasonable price and term are huge before the cap starts to soar again

Kampf exclusively plays defence, almost never gets any o zone starts and still has play driving numbers. In fact, there isn't a forward in the NHL who has such extreme defensive usage last year or this year. He's one of the best defensive centres in the game, Laughton is not that. Keep him.

Konecny is a small forward who has at times done well but needs better linemates to really thrive. He would get them in TO but doesn't really fit what the team needs. Knies will be given a shot before we spend big on a LW. A centre is our target but should be one that makes a big difference. Laughton doesn't in anyway make a big difference, may not even make a difference at all. Holmberg has a strangle hold on 4C and he's cheap and playing great. I wouldn't spend all these assets to push him out of his position just so we can pay Laughton 3 million to not be any better.

Also who cares about hits.
