<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Ah yes, the old "any depth guy from a different team is definitely better than the guys we have accomplishing much better results" sort of post. Laughton isn't nearly as good as Kampf and I doubt Kampf costs 3 million. Bunting may have to go but spending 5 million on Konecny who also is a player who'll ride coattails is a waste of money and these assets.</div></div>
at 5v5, Laughton has nearly the exact same play-driving stats as Kampf despite half his S% and an unfortunate PDO, has three of his last four season with more points than Kampf's career-high 26, and sits a whopping one point behind Kampf while playing on both special teams. His faceoff percentage is weaker but still decent, he has 4x the hits Kampf does in four less games, and if that matters to you, he's also a "local boy",ditto konency. what matters is we get both Laughton and Kampf for this year, which is the key part, then in a worst case we sacrifice a bit of defensive ability for better offensive ability moving forward with Laughton over Kampf. hell, i'd rather let Holl move at the end of the year and allocate some of that 2M for Kampf and now you get both!
As for Konecny, don't know who you've been watching but being a PPG player on *these* Flyers is the complete opposite of 'riding coattails', esp given his linemates and teammates over the years. i'd rather him at 5M than Bunting at 4M for the next three years + we know konency can perform without Matthews and Marner, but we also know bunting can't. and if you don't think there are teams that will give Kampf 3M with a rising cap after seeing what he's done then you must not have seen the parade of former Leaf FAs get paid.
as for the assets required, i'd far rather do this than spend this and more to get 20 games of O'Reilly at his lowest point or Horvat post-shooting percentage downer - at least you get to keep the quality moving forward.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Yep it might be Leafs better this year, but it's way too much long term cap for the Leafs to take on. The would be sure to lose Kampf and Bunting next summer and more.</div></div>
as a whole, the point of the deal is mostly to win this year, without sacrificing all our best prospects. no more adding UFAs who will walk at the cost of assets, but instead adding two quality players with term means we can stay competitive moving forward too - losing Bunting/maybe Kampf will hurt, but that's the price we pay. people thought losing Hyman would cripple us and we added Bunting, then people thought Campbell leaving was a dagger before getting Samsonov for a third of his price. players will come and go, but good players at reasonable price and term are huge before the cap starts to soar again

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>This ensures we lose Bunting and likely Nylander. We can't afford to take on long term money</div></div>
well, couple of things
- bunting is a great player right now because of his contract. he is however not the kind of guy (secondary scorer reliant on playing with better players) you commit term to, and that's the only way we get him at a reasonable AAV. if he signs like a 3x3 then sure, i'm sure we can figure out a way around that, but i would be surprised to see him back + with Knies in the fold he could easily (hopefully) slot into that role as well. Laughton in also means Kampf, while i love him, could leave and that's another 1.5M to spend + maybe Holl's 2M too
- nylander will be fine - he's making 7M right now, the cap is supposed to start jumping up more significantly in two years, and won't honestly command more 10 - that's just a 3M rise, and with Murray, Muzzin (though he's likely Robidas Island-bound at this point), and Brodie all up in two years as well we should have enough for him + Matthews' raise, along with the young Swedes. it's not going to be easy mind you, but i have faith that Dubas & Pridham will continue to find a good balance

oh i fully agree! but he *can* play in the top four with a better partner, as he did (with moderate success) in Toronto
also, the alternative for y'all right now is Zaitsev and uh, there's a reason we got rid of him haha - given the relatively low acquisition cost as well (getting rid of Murray is a massive W), it's better than giving up actual assets given the likely market (unless it's like a DeBrincat-like deal, which was excellent for Ottawa)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sporkknife</b></div><div>I like a lot of your analysis. The fact that Risto went for so much, to me, means a couple of things, Reilly's value not one of those:
1. RHD are gold
2. GM's perceptions of players =/= ACGM's perception of players
The conclusion for me is instead that Reilly is not worth what he probably should be. Anyway, VAN has Rathbone and Hughes on the left side already. If we want Reilly, we will wait until Tessa Virtue begs him to come play at home in Vancouver next year at no trade value :)</div></div>
very fair, but even if you remove the second, and it's just the 9th + Ferland's cap, that feels like a pretty decent trade from Vancouver's perspective - heck, the second could be conditional on a re-sign. The point is the Leafs get a first under a GM who is known for trading down and maximizing value. Plus, Benning ain't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to deal like that, and the PR from bringing in a 'local boy' would have to be appealing on top of his obvious talent. I will say that the deal likely wouldn't happen if they can't move Schmidt's deal - so maybe LA? one pick higher, and a clear need for a top LHD who is still relatively young. Definitely think Leafs can get some serious value regardless, there's always one team who will overpay.

as i said, there's a very real chance Calgary loses Giordano this summer, which leaves them Hanifin and Valamaki as legitimate LHD options. The former is a fine second-pairing guy, while the latter has potential he's yet to really tap into. Rielly is 10th in defencemen scoring over the past three years, and could be a real shot in the arm for Calgary's offence if paired with a defensive guy such as Tanev. And while I'm a big Mangiapane fan, getting a top pairing defenceman for him would be well worth it for any team, imo.

I'm not arguing with you there, he's an extremely valuable player in this league and what he brings to the table is hard to replace! I'd prefer we keep him too, this is just a "what would I be okay with if we had to move him" sorta thought process. More depth also gives a team more chances for staying in a game/series if someone goes cold, as opposed to putting all our eggs in a few baskets. That mentality killed us when two of those big eggs (Matthews and Marner) went cold at the worst possible time. At some point, immense talent or not, production has to come - and Marner's approaching that point.

That's fair, Krejci is just a personal favourite of mine and I think he'd be an ideal fit for that 3C position. I'd believe he's more likely to test FA than Wennberg though; as one of the youngest UFAs who also happens to play centre, he can and will get more, if Florida doesn't re-sign him first. If both are off the table, I'm sure there's another middle-six winger available in that 3M price range who could slide into the top six and drop Granlund to 3C. There's also a couple of options via trade too that wouldn't cost too much either.

generally speaking, I consider recent 5-10 years - during which they've missed the playoffs five times, and were knocked out in round one four times. i'm not dipsuting anything before that though, they were dominant for a quarter century before that, and i certainly can't defend much from a Leafs perspective haha.

money talks, he's a local guy, and the Leafs, despite their wofeul inability to succeed in the playoffs, are still an excellent organization in almost every other aspect a player would care about, top to bottom.
plus, a red wings fan shouldn't be throwing stones regrading recent playoff successes, if we're going there. :p

See, my thinking was this - Shesty and Buch are both RFAs this year, and with only really Smith coming off, there's not a lot of wiggle room. But next year, Shattenkrik and Lundqvist's buyouts drop by 10M, which gives you Rielly and Fox extension money. I get that how the value might be off, but with Panarin/Kreider/Laf/Kakko/Krav already on the wings, I figured one of them would have to go, and LHD seemed like the weakest position (no disrespect to Miller). It's a gamble on a guy with one year left, but the Rangers should be transitioning to a competitive approach and take advantage of Fox/Miller/Kakko/Laf/Krav all on ELCs. Just my two cents.

Fair enough - it's hard to accurately assess what Eichel's trade value is, because we've never really seen a player of his calibre moved as he's approaching his peak (in a modern context, at least). You also have the known quantity vs. future potential debate, as well as the quantity vs. quality debate - it's why I posted it, it was an interesting thought experiment that started this all and I'm curious to see the general reaction.

As I said in the preface, this is in a world where Eichel wants out and the Rangers feel as if they can contend right away. If I'm the Rangers right now, I ride with the youngsters and go from there. But, I will say, Eichel is arguably a top ten player in the league - guys like him aren't and shouldn't easy to acquire.

Honestly not opposed to that - went and re-checked, thought Edmundsson was better than he is. Don't mind Holl, but there could likely be some better options available in FA or through trading him and Johnsson that take up Ed's hypothetical 4M.
