Description
After signing all RFAs and Oshie to a team friendly $5m/5yr deal, this is just meant to illustrate what we are working with without ridding ourselves of Orpik's contract.

This lineup WITH Orpik's contract leaves us $370k in cap space...with a $77m cap! Not good...

Orlov and Kuzy are both getting large RFA deals, that's a given. Schmidt I think is still a bridge kinda guy though after the playoffs and where the league is headed, he's going to make his money soon enough. Connelly is due a raise though not a huge one like the others. Grubauer should probably get more, maybe closer to $2.5m but that's the bind we are in.

While I understand the appeal of his off ice attributes for the young guys, I just can't see how we can validate committing $5.5m to someone who won't help ON the ice. Just shows it would be worth to throw a couple prospects or picks to VGK(or a team like ARI) to take him off our hands so we can improve a couple spots of need while getting the young guys some experience. If it's VGK, it also protects Grubauer and Schmidt. One of those pickups could possibly be a LHD like Daley or Russell who are veteran leaders but probably perform a little better on the ice than Orpik.

Maybe we don't fill a spot w/ a guy like Versteeg. I do like the fact that the reason the young guys didn't get much time in the NHL this year was because we were mostly healthy all season and not because we didn't think they were ready. Vrana could be one of those guys that steps right in and performs well. I think he just got bored at the AHL level and is ready for full time duty in the NHL.

I know you don't want to hear this but I think you might to virtually give a player to Vegas or Arizona to take Orpik.. Vegas selecting Grubauer, caps give Orpik and sorry to say Orlov.
That's a roster of 18 with about 11.5m to spend. Back up goalie 1m, Alzner 5m, vet Dman 1.5m. that's 7.5m with 4 m for two utility forwards.

Also the Yotes aren't taking on a big contract. Why do people think this? They will take on dead cap space but they won't take on money.

I feel Alzner is gone. Everyone is looking for defense. I think he will get a nice payday. I also don't think Oshie is going to give a team discount. This is his last big contract.

Yea, should have been more clear about that part...VGK would only take Orpik along w/ some picks or a couple prospects. They aren't taking him alone, haha!!! Alzner isn't getting $5m from us so I'm not worried about that. He's been solid for us for years but it's time to move on from him. He's earned a big contract and we can't give it to him.

Agreed Alzner is gone. He deserves the big contract he's gonna get, just won't come from the Caps. Love what he did for the organization but he's just not what the league is transitioning too. He'd be a bottom pair w/ us and other teams are gonna give him top 4 money I'm sure.

In terms of Oshie, it's his last big contract but he also came out and said he loves DC, his family loves DC, he hates to pick up and move and loves the guys in the locker room. Either his agent came out and slapped him in the face after that interview or he meant it which means as long as the Caps don't low-ball him and offer him something less than what he was making on his last contract, I see him staying for less than what other teams will offer.
