It's a 1st in this years draft and replacement for Greenway.

You move him for this. Move Greenway somewhere else, and go acquire Schenn or better yet Chychrun to replace Dumba.

If you're referring to Edmonton, for a 50% retained Dumba I think they do this.

Not with retention they don't. Maybe not even without retention if they're still in a playoff spot at the deadline.

Minnesota has $16.5M in cap space to spend on TDL acquisitions this year.

They can afford to retain on Dumba, and Edmonton cannot take his cap hit otherwise. Dumba retained is probably a low 1st in value, Puljujärvi on top of that is just there to make the cap work for Edmonton.

Maybe Minnesota throws a late pick to even things out. But this is probably pretty even in terms of value.

They'll use it on TDL acquisitions for themselves, not waste 6 mil of that cap space without improving their own team by giving edmonton Dumba cheap and taking on another 3 mil in a problem player like Puljujarvi. Minnesota is more likely to go after productive proven players like Bo Horvat, Timo Meier or Vladimir Tarasenko. Don't forget Vancouver is looking for a RD too.

They want nothing to do with Horvat, too high a asking price. They're more interested in one of Kane or Toews, possibly O'Reilly.

And keep in mind they stay cap neutral with this trade. Dumba at full retention is $3M, and Puljujärvi is likewise $3M.

Dumba (50% retained) $3M <=/=> $3M Puljujärvi.

That still leaves the $16.5M they would of had with Dumba on roster, if Puljujärvi comes over in the trade. They lose nothing, and probably could gain another $3M in cap space by moving Greenway. They still have plenty of cap space to go get further TDL acquisitions.

Agreed that this is way too cheap for Dumba with 50% retained…realistically EDM needs to add a little more to make this work
