Only way Horvat works read description

Description
IMO, this is the only scenario in which the Avs trade for Horvat at the TDL and I'm still not sure it works or if it's a great idea - losing Girard leaves a hole at D that will be tough to fill in terms of how the Avs like to play; Behrens is not ready to step into the NHL next season. Also, for the purposes of this AGM, let's assume this is a package VAN will accept and nobody else matches.

Horvat comes with an extension that kicks in this season so now we see what the roster and cap situation looks like. He takes a little less than what he was offered in VAN because he's paying less in taxes and playing for a winner.

Some things to keep in mind: Rantanen and Byram will need more money soon so the cap needs to go up by about $10M over the next few years for them to be able to keep the core together; can't really see that happening but, you never know. They're also likely to lose Toews in FA after next season so, another significant hole on the blueline.

The only piece you have that the Canucks would want is Newhook

Zero chance you're getting an extended Horvat for that offer, An extended Horvat starts with one of Byram or Newhook not that offer. And good luck getting Horvat to sign for anything less than $8,000,000 to $8,500,000 per. No way he's taking $7,500,000 per when there are offers for him that are way more than this at free agency.

pretty big overpay, whether you extend him or not does not affect his trade value

WTF are you talking about? Colorado is the team that negotiates the extension, not Vancouver. There is absolutely zero incentive for Colorado to pay premium for him to come pre-signed

Lol what? An extended Horvat has more value than a rental Horvat.

Idk about the people on this site sometimes lol

Which is why it doesn't work for the Avs to trade for him and the reason I posted this - it makes no sense for the Avs to make a trade for Horvat that doesn't allow for him to be re-signed.

My OP says that he comes with an extension but these things are often negotiated by the team taking the player but it could be a sign-and-trade. I would think the Avs would have to be sure they could afford the extension before making the trade. In any event, I still don't think it works.

There has only ever been 1 sign-and-trade in NHL history and it was Tkachuk this summer. That was because Calgary was the only team in the league that could sign him to an 8 year extension at the time of the trade. That is not the case with Horvat, any team that acquires him before the TDL can sign him to an 8 year deal at any point up until he officially becomes a UFA in the summer.
