I don’t think you can give Meier more than you gave Hughes

I can't imagine Meier would care much about what Hughes is making... Hughes being underpaid doesn't mean that Meier should be as well.

Bratt signing is probably a bit light. There would need to be compromises made next season if Fitz were to trade for Meier. Possibly a Vitek+Schmid/Daws tandem next season or a very inexperienced defence.

There are so many known quality prospects in the devils system I would think San Jose asks for one instead of an unknown 1st

I wouldn’t flinch at the trade price. But whether we like it or not, Blackwood is one of goalies right now and unlikely to be moved in-season. (Would San Jose even want him?).

Problem isn’t Hughes. Jack’s deal is done.

Problem would be Bratt. If we sign Meier at $9m and then ask Bratt to take $7m, he is going to sign his QO and walk in a year.
