Addressing Biggest Needs

Created by: Yinzer
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 26, 2023
Published: Jan. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Anyone who has watched the Pens knows that the Penguins biggest need is a legit 3C. They also need insurance in goal.

One thing they consistently struggle with, however, is winning puck battles in front of their own net. Edmundson adds size and crease-clearing ability.

CHI accepts. Stalock has been really solid and a bright spot for CHI this season... when he isn't injured. He is also a really fun goalie to watch. But that doesn't make him worth a whole lot in trade. So this should do. He should be a solid backup or depth goaltender if he can stay healthy.

Not sure if that's enough for the Ducks to accept for Henrique, but I think it's close. If I could make one move before the deadline this season, it's aquiring Henrique. Good 2-way center, probably won't break the bank.
Not a fan of Edmundsun. While I don't disagree that his style of play is something we could use, I don't think he's beating POJ for that spot in the lineup, and I'm not too thrilled about moving either Poulin or Smith, let alone both.
Stalock is whatever. I think Tokarski did fine in his short stint out of the AHL, and I kinda want to see what Lindberg could do.

Ducks probably say no.
Pens decline the Habs trade. Wouldn’t trade one of those players for Edmundson, much less both.
I think both accept the Chicago trade.

It's Kapanen or McGinn, theyre the only guys in the neighborhood of 3 mil AAV not carrying NTCs.

To answer the question though, no, a 2nd and a 3rd probably doesn't do it for us. As he is under contract next year as well, you're asking for extended retention and buying cap space this season and next. Furthermore, we are currently using Henrique at 1LW and don't have a replacement to put there. With Kapanens extra year on the deal, we essentially are trading Henrique for Kapanen, still paying Henriques full AAV (bit more actually) and getting a 2nd and a 3rd for our trouble. With such a significant downgrade, and moving from a position of need (LW) to one that we really don't have a need (RW) plus the limited market of veteran defensive centers avaliable (ROR and Toews), we don't see any reason to demand less than a 23 1st.

If we don't get it, cool, we still have Henrique until next TDL when he will fetch a 2nd and a B prospect with retention.
