My ALL IN

Created by: fangm
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 29, 2023
Published: Jan. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I've put Murray on IR since I think with his latest injury it makes sense to shut him down for the season and do what we did with Freddie, let him rehab, give him an AHL stint in March/April and have him backup in the playoffs then we can likely move him for free in the summer to a team that needs a goalie, I don't think he's a cap dump at his current hit and performance level.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Hughes, Quinn ($1,850,000 retained)
Additional Details:
From Hockeybuzz's CEO and hockey insider, "I, along with pretty much everyone else, felt that Quinn Hughes may have been one of the very few Canucks that was not available…However, per three sources, the Canucks will listen but the ASK is “As much if not more than you can imagine.” The one team I would look to could be the Devils. There is very much an appetite in NJ to have the three Hughes kids. The feeling is by getting them all together it will create a lot of excitement as well as a reason for the three to stay when they become UFA’s"

If this is true it is 100% a trade I would love the Leafs to make. Rielly is still a top 15D in the league but he is a step behind after the injury and I don't want to blow a season cause our #1D couldn't get up to speed. Also for the next 4 seasons Rielly as a #3 will be more effective as he ages being shielded from top competition.

Givest he leafs a great #1 and #3 for the next half decade and with Broadie/Lili as potential 2s for that time its a great core for the D.
VAN
  1. Niemelä, Topi
  2. Robertson, Nicholas
  3. Sandin, Rasmus
  4. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
If the rumour is right and they are asking for as much or more than I could imagine then I'm putting an Eichel type price stage here.

Sandin is young proven NHL D who will likely be a 2-4 D for the next decade.

Niemela is a young prospect with top 2 potential, Dobber prospects has him as an 8.5/10 NHL certainty and had him near superstar potential last year (that has dropped this year to second pair player).

Robertson people are more familiar with he's virtually a lock to be an NHL player likely a second liner but with a small chance of being 1st liner/superstar type player.

This package is in my opinion a little more than the Eichel trade (at least at the time it was made, Tuch obviously turned out to be way better than expected). But the Leafs are also getting retention, I think the retention is fair to maximize his value, especially in a retool (I think that's what major surgery means) and we don't get back the midround pick that Vegas did. Also factor in that this year's draft is super deep and people aren't freely moving 2023 1sts.
2.
TOR
  1. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I know this is a fantasy trade but I think IRL that Dubas could be smart about this. You are able to go over the cap by 10% in the summer and he could find a way to qualify or extend Meier then trade him or to find cheaper replacements for Murray/Kerfoot.
SJS
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Engvall, Pierre
  3. Hirvonen, Roni
  4. Knies, Matthew [Reserve List]
  5. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
  6. 2025 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Knies is a big piece but I don't think he should be seen as untouchable in a year where we could win it.

Hirvonen is a great prospect with 7.5/10 NHL certainty as a 2nd line winger. I think he is a piece we need to lose in a trade like this.

Abruzzese made the Leafs last year and a change of scenery to a team that can give him NHL minutes could really help him, so I think he's a great get for San Jose.

The two 1sts are obvious.
3.
TOR
  1. 2023 5th round pick (WSH)
4.
TOR
  1. Roslovic, Jack ($2,000,000 retained)
CBJ
  1. Minten, Fraser
Additional Details:
Minten likely goes 20-30 in a redraft of last draft so its essentially a 1st for Roslovic which I think is about what the Blue Jackets could expect if they retain half.

Not even close to Hughes. Knies + Liljegren + Sandin + 1st minimum. Even then other teams have higher end pieces to offer

To be fair, Hughes is a excellent D-man, but what does he do that the Leafs D-man can't do? You're adding another skilled, high scoring dman to a D-core that needs size.

That's not getting Quinn...not even close. Niemela is going to be a top 4 guy likely, with a ceiling of top 2 but unlikely he hits that. Sandin is not a top 2 player, no way. He's a 2nd liner at best. Robertson is damaged goods and has little trade value as of now. 1st + Knies is the absolute starting base of a package plus more (Sandin or Lillypad as an example) and it's non negotiable.

Too much for Timo Meier. (2) 1sts plus a little more (Voigt or Abruzzese for example) should get it close, but SJ will want the 2023 1st in that package which is problem because you will need it for Quinn hughes.

Vancouver isn't retaining on Quinn Hughes for the next 4.5 years, He's not available and that offer would be blown away by other teams that have better pieces to offer.

Absolutely no need for Hughes; doesn’t tick one box the Leafs need, hard to see how / why ‘Nucks would move him & acquisition cost would be astronomical. Really makes zero sense imo.
