Unorthodox Way to Economize Cap Space

Description
So we usually think of salary retention as a way for contending teams to fit huge cap hits under their roster at the trade deadline. But in this case, we're using it to get some fourth line players for sub-league-minumum cap hits. We send Chicago and Anaheim a bit of an overpay to get them to retain what's really a small amount of cash. And in return, we get a fourth line that only costs us $1.6M TOTAL against the cap. That would be huge for getting Chytil and Miller on long-ish deals.

Even with that loophole though, it looks like Goodrow still gotta go. Keeping Goodrow would mean we can sign Chytil OR Miller to a long term deal, but not both (unless one of them took a huge discount.)

Sorry, Goodrow stays. He can block any trade to a non playoff team with cap.

Hawks aren't likely to waste retention slots like that.

The Ducks aren't using a retention slot on a guy making barely over league minimum. If you need that sort of retention you should seriously reconsider how you manage your cap space.

Lol I will admit, I forgot that teams only get so many retention slots. Also it’s obviously unlikely that this would be used for three players.

Still think it could be used for one player though, but at that point you’re only saving about $300k max vs another guy on a league minimum contract. Every bit helps!
