Leafs TDL

Created by: AV12
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 30, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reasoning behind the deals:

DET: From the Horvat and Tarasenko trades it seems teams are willing to take back money (Blais and Beuvillier) so for Vrana where a buyout seems likely, instead they get a 3rd and early negotiating rights for Kerfoot before he hits UFA and B- prospect in Abruzzese.

ANA: Leafs said they will not move a first for a rental and also will look to improve both F and D. Kulikov provides the update at D and I think will be well suited for a bottom pairing role if Sandin/Holl falters in playoffs. Henrique will be a solid add for either 3C or 2/3 LW and has one year left, retention would be necessary. The pick probably needs to be the 23' first instead but can anything be added to make the 24' first work?

Sure. Just add your 2023 third if you want to keep your 2023 first.

Id honestly take that deal, as a ducks fan has Henrique been playing C or LW more this season, same with Kulikov can he actually play the right side?

Kulikov has been playing Fowler's right side the past few games and has looked good there. Value for value, he really has been our best defender this season (not that that's saying much, of course) -- so good we may try to re-sign him instead of trading him at the deadline.

Henrique can play LW with Zegras or alternate back and forth at C with McTavish. One of the advantages to acquiring him is insurance against losing Bunting to free agency; with retention he'd be cheaper than re-upping Kerfoot and he'll probably be cheaper than Bunting even if Bunting stays.

Yeah Yzerman isn't retaining no 50% on Vrana for the next 1.5 years. When we can just terminate his contract at any time.

Also depth at center in case one of the big two goes down with an injury in the playoffs, like has already happened before.

I'd argue, for two retained players, especially with Henrique being the extra year of retention, it should be the 23 1st and 23 3rd, and we will take back two nothing contracts to keep Toronto contract compliant, and that should be the basis of the trade. I'm willing to push back to the 24 1st but i'd need an interesting piece added for the value difference in the left wing flavor of a high risk high reward type.

That’s not at all how it works, if you buy out Vrana the he counts for 1.4M on the cap in the 23-24 season and then 1.9M in the 24-25 season. Retaining 50% and getting a 3rd is the better choice vs a buyout.
