TDL Draft 2023

Created by: ML16
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2023
Published: Feb. 13, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trades occur in chronological order, from TDL 2023 (Edmundson, Monahan, Drouin and Meier) to pre-draft 2023 (Dubois and Hoffman).

Added Farrell since he likely finishes the current season in Montreal and a top-5 pick candidate on the roster as well, since he’ll likely start next season.

Unlike the projected 2023-2024 lineup that would result from the trades, the cap situation is 2022-2023 based.

But to give a general idea of the Habs’ financial leeway post-trades, if they sign Caufield, Meier and Dubois for about 8M AAV each, they’d have a 21-men roster with 10M to spare, enough to survive the dead cap era and be in excellent position when it rises again and contract values go into overdrive.

Mike Hoffman stinks, and so do these trades.

You also have more than 3 contracts retained.

I thought Hoffman was ass until I saw he's actually on pace for just under 50 points which actually shocked me

Winnipeg isn't doing that. They do not have enough bad contacts to send back to make dumping Anderson possible.

You can make the argument that Joel Edmundson with 50% retention is worth a second, although I don't think so, and you can argue that the-unsigned-whose-rights-are-about-to-expire Jason Struble and a fourth are worth a same-slot third, although I don't think so, but what does Helge Grans have to do with this?

In this scenario, to circumvent the salary retention spots limit, Hoffman would be traded pre-draft, when he’s UFA-to-be in 2023-2024. That way only Edmundson and Hoffman have retained salary next season. If he keeps his current space - 50pts/season, he might very find a taker for a mid-round pick

My aim with the Edmundson trade was filling an organizational need by adding a promising RHD, thus Gelre. But Edmundson doesn’t have to be traded this year, nor with retention, so he must fetch more thab just a prospect, hence the 2nd and 3rd. Because of Edmundson’s injury, I’m also adding Struble - good yet expendable LHD prospect - and a 4th as collateral to get It done, hopefully!
