I'm not going to try to speak for the Oilers, but I just can't see San Jose paying EK $19.5 million not to play for them, as @Ledge_And_Dairy intimates.

Sharks. They won't retain that much and frankly Edmonton doesn't need them to. Move Puljujarvi already, plug in a cheap option, and there is your space. Paying Karlsson 8-9M a season for the duration of the contract is a fair price. Obviously lower the better for the Oilers but it won't be more than 25% retention.
