How We Couldve Made Use Of What We Had

Description
Although the Leafs have acquired a lot of good players this deadline, the fact that we have to spend valuable assets to add "replaceable" NHL players, and overhaul half the roster shows that there is a problem in the way we're running the team, because the guys we added could've brought in during the offseason, which would've saved us a lot of assets.

And in terms of NHL upside, all of the guys that we brought during the offseason except maybe Gaudette are NHL-quality players, with the right player usage and right system, they would've been effective.

The fact that we got all these guys with a specific player profile (defensive forwards with good forecheck and mobile shutdown D) yet are still getting blown out every game shows that the coach is trying to force a system that is not complementary to their skillset.

Why do we want to play a puck possession system where the players need to hold onto the puck, make clean breakout passes, lots of low-to-high movement and cross-scene passes when the guys we bring in to support the core are guys that are suited more to just hold the line, fire point shots, create shots and rebounds off a heavy cycle?

The reality is that anyone can play in the NHL as long as you have the physical speed and strength to keep up, the decision making just comes down to whether the system during your usage suits your playmaking.

This guy isn't much but if we used him on a line with ZAR and Kampf for matchup purposes with the Giordano or Brodie pair, rather than to make creative plays he would've been much more effective

Not even factoring yesterday's game, at his salary and upside he was worth keeping

      CGY
Hunt, McMann and Malgin would've all been very effective bottom 6 players if they were used in a heavy forecheck system - it would've saved us a lot of assets and I'm willing to bet that the guys we acquired this deadline are gonna face the same issue with the system by the season's end

*If we deployed the players properly and saved assets, we could've gotten someone who is actually a big-impact player, not just bring in new players with the same profiles as the one we let go only to try them in a system that doesn't suit them

TO cant afford timo and his contract. i also think dryden hunt is an underrated forechecker and puck carrier.

Yes. Hunt, McMann, NAK all would’ve been effective if someone like Torts was coaching.

The team is fine as it is.

All the guys were traded in the midst of a road trip, and need some time to settle into their new environment, and gain some chemistry with their new linemates.

Some losses were to be expected.

You said "spend valuable assets to add "replaceable" NHL players, and overhaul half the roster shows that there is a problem in the way we're running the team"

That's the very nature of the rental market, usually the guys who are acquired as rentals are replaceable. It's not something particular to the Leafs. The only rental that the Leafs spent heavily on is O'Reilly and a player like him isn't easily acquired/replaced.

I still think you guys would've done better to get Jensen and Sheary from us. Sheary would have been dynamite in the Leafs lineup

Sandin is the Caps all time leader in points per game. On pace for 246 points over 82 games

Exactly. If we were giving up Sandin, we should’ve at least gotten one of them in the deal.

First of all, how dare you slander the Great Dane of Stanley Cup winning goal lore. That man will never have to buy a drink in the DC metro area for as long as he lives. Second of all...... yeah, that's about what you should expect with anymore unfortunately. Love the guy but he's not great.
