Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2023
Published: Mar. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the team gets dumped TOO easily in the second round in the 22-23 playoffs, so this is what they do. Not a rebuild, but signing/re-signing/acquiring some quality depth/two way, physical guys who will be here beyond the matthews/brodie/nylander/etc... contract finishing.

Lafferty/Acciari are 13th forward, Holmberg is first call up and Hirvonen at 4LW if Robertson falters.

  3. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Murray cost OTT with 33% retention cost and a probable mid to high in the round 3rd, hes proven to be just as unreliable as advertised (and although a buyout would be cheaper in 23-24, it would hurt in 24-25). Murray cost the low round BOS 1st to move, so its Niemala and a 3rd THREE drafts away for Laughton and Allison

Laughton plays a good 2 way game and plays all 3 positions and is a feisty guy. Hes got 41 pts in 67 games in 14:37 TOI on a team that ranks near last in scoring. Allison would be one of the few leaf youngsters who has and uses his size. Niemala, as a RD, is the only good piece coming from TOR.

As I said in description, for Leafs to get rid of injury prone Murray without retention or buyout, it probably cost a 2nd, (which isn;t too much less than what OTT paid: retention and a 3rd). The BOS 1st is probably very low in the round, and the Leafs dont have a 2nd, so really its Niemala and a 3rd in 2025 for Laughton and Allison which I think is pretty even.

Depends on what you think of Laughton AND what you think of Niemala, but not a ripoff

There's not a chance the Flyers take on a goalie. Torts wants Ersson on the big club and we aren't moving Hart.

why couldnt they retain 1 million and move him for less, and not offer schenn 1.5 mill and have a 1.1 mill scratch.

Possibly, but OTT retain 33% and gave up what seemed to be a mid round 3rd, (turned out to be a high round 3rd), Toronto doesn;t have a 2nd or 3rd, so even with 1mil in retention, what pick do they offer for someone to take a VERY expensive 4.675mil backup who's never healthy enough to be a backup. And having Acciari/Lafferty is a nice luxury and for a change, Leafs will be playing two rookie forwards with third rookie Holmberg as the 14th.

IMO, Laughton and Allison are worth more than Niemala and a 3rd in 2025, three drafts away, but dropping Murray at full whack is probably a high/mid round 2nd, lacking one of those the difference is the late round BOS 1st

Mrazek was traded for a drop of 13 places in last year's draft and Murray is way better than him and only has next season for term. It's hilarious how quickly people forget that but love to point out how Ottawa gave up a 3rd and retained to move him. He rebuilt his value by playing well in TO. Teams need goaltending, many of them do. Murray has some meager value. So no moving Niemela to get two guys we don't need to help out the Flyers is a bad idea.

Assuming Briere isn’t an idiot like Chuck Fletcher, Philly takes that and runs. Pretty highly regarded prospect and a late 1. ****. Just buyout Murray or let him rot in the minors for a year.

If a 4.7mil backup who has been on IR and LTIR 4-5 times (and likely will continue to) and will play in only about 30 games, and has not seen playoff success for 5 yrs or more is good cap management for a team up against the cap, then I guess you're right, Murray is great in TOR.

Has he rebuilt his value? His 4.7mil value? By pointing out Mrazek and trading him for a loss in draft places, you've only reinforced that Murray is a negative property. And its also about having that cap space to improve the team, Murray has not improved the team, but his 4.7mil cap space may.

Used car sales tactics are transparent bud. "Here's a trade that certainly benefits me way more than you but it makes sense because everything you have is terrible and what I am sending you is better than the Garbage you have so I am doing you a favor by taking your garbage that I definitely want because it's not Garbage but I will tell you it's garbage so I can get it for free."

It's classic capfriendly

You not considering Murray as a negative or garbage is the classic.

You continually avoid the facts. The facts are that Murray at 4.675mil is a horrendous addition who , as advertised, cant stay healthy. And you use the similar Mrazek as a sample case, even though he was dealt at a loss. The leafs need that 4.7mil in cap space more than the unreliable contributions from Murray.

You contend that TOR is giving up assets, even though Niemala is not an NHLer yet, and quite possibly never be, and contend that Laughton in 3rd line time on a teasm that cant score who has 41 pts in 67 games is garbage, or that Allison who has size and plays physical, something no leaf player his age does is garbage. Maybe Im over rating Laughton and Allison, but you're definitely over rating the return for Leafs have to offer

But the proof is in the pudding and lets see if Murray can contribute at a 4.7mil level over the next month or so, to justify him being anything more than a cap dump

You want Niemela so you dumpster Murray to justify you getting him for nothing. Classic
