Description

Team continues to under perform due to bad goaltending, so a top 8 draft pick is still likely even with the addition of a few UFAs. Clifton and Severson should shore up the defense and Bertuzzi bolsters the top 6 while playing GMMG-brand hockey. Offense still suffers without Karlsson or Meier. Might need to sweeten the deals to entice them to come to a bottom-feeder (i.e. more term or higher AAV).

Sharks draft Carlsson 4th overall (assuming no movement in the lottery), and he stays in SHL for one more year.

Unsure about the Karlsson destination with Edmonton off the table, but return is 2 prospects and a 1st + 2nd. I feel like he would take the Kraken to the next level. Might need to add another player from the Seattle side to balance salary, but dunno who they want to dump.

Kahkonen and Driedger both had bad 2022-23 seasons, but either could rebound. Otherwise continue to explore goalie options in free agency or via trade next next offseason. With a goaltending solution in place in 2024, the team might be ready to think about competing for playoffs.

Labanc and Barabanov can be shipped at the trade deadline.

Driedger is an awful goalie. Clifton is overpaid here. Driedger played in the AHL only this year, Grier said he wanted to improve the goaltending, not make it worse.

Fair point. What do you expect he fetches in FA given the good goal scoring record and injury history?

That's the point of the post. How to tank while improving the rest of the team. Not sure there is an answer in goal just waiting for the Sharks to swoop in.

Grier has said things and done the opposite before. I don't see the value of finding marginal improvements in goal.

Signing Severson and Bertuzzi is the very antithesis of tanking. Why it's questionable you would sign a minor league goaltender. Taking is keeping Zetterlund and Gregor in the top 9. I doubt SJ finishes as low next year, certainly almost no shot at Kivijarju or Celebrini, probably be back in the #10 to #12 range so might as well sign an actual decent goaltender who could have a future in SJ

I think this season proved you can have decent skaters (a Norris trophy winner even) and still finish bottom 5 if your goaltending is bad enough. I don't think guys like Raanta or Jarry are the long-term solutions, so might as well get another high draft pick next season.

Your point is well taken though. These UFA signings might not be the right guys for the future either. But Grier seems open to adding a few decent players to build the culture for the next wave of prospects coming up.

I expect he gets around what you have (maybe 250k-500k more), but I get the feeling Bertuzzi is looking for a long-term $7+ million deal. I'd be curious if he'd do a 1yr "prove it" deal as the cap after next season is expected to go up about $3 million and then $4.5 million the following off-season. Team maybe willing to give him more with the cap increasing, but he'll also be a year older and would be betting on himself, which is a HUGE risk with his injury concerns.
