TOR just buys out Murray and trades Brodie for a pick, instead.

Nah... wouldn't be as good for TOR if they're trying to resign Matthews & Nylander in a year

After his situation with Montreal, There's no way that Jeff Petry will waive to go to any Canadian team.

David Reinbacher probably doesn't fall to the Buffalo pick. He'll probably go in the top 8 or 9 he's that high in most mock drafts. But we shall see.

Then they find another team to buy him out using the pick they gain from a Brodie trade and keep their 1st.

Nah, we just buy him out and it has absolutely no effect on a Matthew's signing an extension.

Leafs don't even consider. You want Brodie, pay up. Teams will be lining up for a guy like him

As for Murray, Leafs can just eat up $2M while adding a late round pick in a dump. If no one wants him, we can just buy him out

What exactly do the Penguins get out of this?
Petry is still a legit 2nd pairing D capable of playing 1st pairing minutes when needed, despite being overpaid by $1-1.5M. DeSmith is a solid backup coming off of a poor season. We're giving up those two and a lottery pick in exchange for a defenseman who hasn't shown significant development during his career, and a former legend who makes Jarry look like the picture of health.
Why should the next regime even consider this?
