Avalanche Projecting 2023-24

Created by: HockeyScotty
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2023
Published: May 2, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
BIG BLOCKBUSTER of a trade in Bo Byram to Broadway in exchange for Landeskog's replacement: Lafreniere. I don't think the Avs can afford to sign Byram due to health concerns and while he had "high event" moments in playoffs he also made lots of untimely turnovers. Girard didn't. Sell high!

Landy on IR but not LTIR as they get him back after the All-Star Break (projection).

Moving Rantanen to 2C is our best option at this point and signing a fellow Finn to man the RW in his place alongside Lehky for a full Finnish 2nd line. At least until Landeskog is back then he can drop to bottom 6.

Signing Scott Mayfield solidifies the 3rd pair blueliners and provides veteran depth; allowing Toews to go back on his strong side.

Newhook stays on 3rd line LW (where he belongs IMO).

Ben Meyers takes over at 3rd line pivot.

NCAA free agent Polin and last year's defensive signing Aamodt (ever forgets him) step up onto the NHL roster. Polin would get bumped down when Landy is healthy.

Veteran signing in Grant at 4C to replace Helm/Cogliano.

The cap space can accrue to the deadline so there will be around $3 million to pickup someone in the middle 6 or a veteran defender if needed (like Jan Rutta, Sean Walker, or Connor Murphy with retention).

Byram will command just as much as Lafreniere, So it makes no sense for New York

And Scott Mayfield will easily command 4 x $4,000,000 4 x $1,500,000 is totally laugh

I can't see any of this happening and there are better options for Byram trades; if they're going to move one of Byram, Girard or Toews, they need a good C coming back.

My thoughts:

First and foremost, the Avs aren't trading Byram. Laf would be nice, but Bo looks like a top pair D for the next decade. You don't move a guy like that.

Aamodt won't be in the NHL next year (if ever), and it's doubtful Poulin will be either.

Is Landeskog on LTIR? If so then there is more cap space available. And if not, then the Avs don't need another wing (especially not at the cost of Byram).

Mayfield gets a lot more.

Newhook gets more.

Meyers at 3C is cringy.

Trading Byram to get Laf is a big no, Bo is a top 4 D and already so much better than Laf

I sure hope Newhook doesn't; he didn't play that well and hasn't shown more than 3rd line "potential" so far.

Losing Compher might make Meyers our only 3C option (aside from Newhook; but he is not responsible defensively).

Aamondt/Polin might not be ready but unless we sign half a dozen vets to minimum deals our bottom 6 and bottom pair is just about a clean slate next year.
