Description
Alright, second version of this. Taking some feedback from a few teams to try and reach a consensus on a few trades.

Based on the feedback from my last thread - the Scheifele to Pittsburgh trade is a winner.

Didnt hear anything about the Ehlers trade, so I'm interested in some feedback.

Detroit - I swapped Dillon for Pionk (apparently you guys need another RHD), and added a 3rd round pick, so as far as the NYI pick is concerned, you're kind of just trading back, not losing the pick. I commented this in my previous post, but there are about 10 teams that would be in on a Hellebuyck at 50% trade, and the heat is being turned up on Yzerman to take a step forward. Adding Hellebuyck to the Red Wings would instantaneously make them a playoff team. He's the only goalie who is potentially available that does anything close to this. It's a super super weak UFA goalie group, and there isn't a team in the league with 'two' goalies looking to trade one. You might not like the trade, but you're going to have to give more than you'd like to get a player who has been nominated for the Vezina twice in the last five years, and won once.

Montreal - Y'all can feel free to disagree with this, but I honestly think it was an error in judgement that you didn't pony up and trade for PLD last year. Even at a discount, last year he would have cost you $6.5M for 8 years, this year, it's probably going to cost you $7.5M, next year it's probably going to cost you $8.5M. Add in the fact that last year the contract would have taken him to 31 y/o, this year it will be 32, and next will be 33. The years on the end of the contract are becoming less and less efficient the longer you wait. If you wait until he's UFA its a double whammy of paying more, and taking on less efficient years. You still get back the Seattle 1st rounder, and you get to roll Suzuki-PLD down the middle for the next 8 years while you round out the rest of the lineup.

I added a Dillon trade because the Jets need to free up space on the left side, and Anaheim's defense is no bueno. He's a legit NHL defenceman who isnt going to mess things up for you.

San Jose needs a whole damn hockey team, so trading back from 4 to pick up two top-20 picks in a deep draft makes a lot of sense if you ask me.

Players brought through FA were 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in points on our team. "Didn't have anything to show for it."

This is what I meant a few days ago. There's a bit of Yzerman hate out there now. Not from Red Wings fans. Maybe I just didn't notice it before.

Not a student of the game hey. So many questions about the Det trade.

To give context for what you are asking for and the historical prospective, the Red Wings in 2001 traded for Dominik Hašek the cost being a 1st round pick (#30 in 2002) Vyacheslav Kozlov and future considerations. That is a long time ago, before the cap and when draft picks were not as highly valued. Cory Schneider in 2013 for the 9th overall pick is the next closest thing, but had two years left on his deal, and at the time was a league leader in goal. The point is that the ask for have here is beyond a reason for a historical reference.

Now for a little more context the rest of the team was stacked and Hasek was the piece that got them over the hump. That pick was the 20th in the 2002 in a very mediocre draft and you are comparing to the 9th and the 17th pick in one of the deepest drafts we've seen in years. Kozlov was 30 at the time of that trade and was flipped after 1 season with a 2nd round pick to Atlanta for a 2nd and a 3rd. The 2 situations are so far apart you to like comparing apples to oranges.

I've heard many people on podcasts over the last few weeks do the "I wonder if people are starting to ask questions about the Yzerplan in Detroit?' schtick.

I'm not saying he's in the hot seat but he spent a bunch of money on FAs last year and didn't really have anything to show for it.

When Detroit started their rebuild it was after 25 straight seasons in the playoffs and thats 25 years of buying at the TDL. They had very little in terms of talent. The link below shows how bad Detroit has been since missing the playoffs.

Detroit since last playoff appearance.

Now Detroit has participated in 7 draft Lotteries and dropped back 8 spots. Including having one of the worst seasons in NHL history and then getting the 4th over all pics and haven't had a top 3 pick since 1990. To be clear THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN BAD LUCK!!!

2017 9th -2
2018 6th -1
2019 6th -2
2020 4th -3
2021 6th 0
2022 8th 0
2023 9th 0

So to answer question Yzerman is doing the best he can and I don't see how anyone can blame him. Is it his fault that Bertuzzi got injured and had an awful season or Vrana having personal issues and needed to be traded? they were both in Detroit's top 6 coming into last season. Really really bad luck.

Habs have no reason to make this deal (and yes, I've read the description). PLD doesn't get you 5th overall, even if you add SEA's, who could very well end in the Final-4. Stanley is of no-use for the Habs, who already have TONS of LHD, and therefor doesn't add any value to this deal. Easy pass.

Hasek basically traded himself to Detroit. He told Sabres GM Darcy Regier he'd retire if he wasn't traded to Detroit or St. Louis. He wanted to win a Cup. Holland and Regier were buddies from their minor league playing days. Both were goalies.

Furthermore, Hasek told Regier not to take too much back in a trade because it would hurt his chances of winning a Cup. So the trade was Hasek for Kozlov and a 1st plus an additional 1st if Hasek didn't retire after the 01/02 season.

Red Wings won the Cup and Hasek retired (1st time) so Detroit didn't have to give up that additional 1st.

The previous summer Holland wanted to sign UFA Jeremy Roenick. JR was interested in Detroit and asked Kenny Holland "what are you going to do about your goaltending?"

Holland replied "Nothing. We have Chris Osgood." JR says "I'm not signing with you if he's the goalie." JR then signed with the Flyers.

It was a wake up call for Holland. He realized he had to make a move in net. Lucky for him the Hasek trade fell into his lap. Regier had 1 hand tied behind his back and Kenny took his old buddy to the cleaners.

I actually remember that trade and I'm sorry but what they want for Hellebuyck isn't even close to what we paid for Hasek.

Especially since the Jets have no leverage with Detroit. We already have a starting goalie in Husso. And if Stevie did have any interest in Helly, he'd simply wait until next summer to sign him as a UFA knowing Helly is a Michigan Boy who'd probably have Detroit at the top of his list.

The 2002 draft was on the weak side as well. Filppula had the 4th most points in that draft class.
