I always wonder if Arizona has any interest in what matthews is going to cost

I wouldn’t do this from AZ POV. Next year they’ll likely have Guenther and Cooley up full time to go with Schmaltz, Hayton, and Keller. They still have jacksh!t for defense and will not be a playoff team. They should evaluate where they’re at money wise and contract wise with Cooley and Guenther and try to make Matthews work in free agency. Because in 2 seasons, with Matthews and having Geekie up as well, their offense will be electric.

Moral of the story: I wouldn’t trade all those picks for a guy who I can sign one year later when my team is more ready to need him for free.

Or the Coyotes wait until next summer and sign hometown boy Matthews as a UFA and keep the picks. If you look closely how the Coyotes are building their team it's almost as if they're planning to add a 15 mil AAV player on July 1, 2024. 😉

Coyotes aren't doing that. They can just wait for him to join them as a UFA and it's not like they need him next season, they're still rebuilding.

This is NOT a team set for a rebuild and JT clearly isn't the long-term answer as a #1. So, the only way Matthews moves is if the Leafs can' extend him, but I have a feeling he wouldn't turn down $14 million over 8 years to remain here. If the Leafs are going to retool, they'd be smarter dealing Nylander (who a team could resign as part of the deal) or even Marner, who has 2 years left on his large deal. In my opinion Nylander gets you the best return, theoretically, of pieces the Leafs could "afford" to give up. However, if Kyle Dubas remains our GM, I don't see any sort of major changes happening with roster turnover - he is simply too loyal and also too stubborn to do so.
