Both sides would think it is not a good deal but this is comparable to what Sens got for Karlsson. It will free up cap space for players like O’Rielly who was an important factor in the play offs. It also drops the dead wait of Murray

Toronto probably wants Schmaltz. And just have RoR as a VERY good 3c or injury insurance.

Schmaltz+12 is a more sensible package. Keeps things simple, and Toronto gets a top 6 forward + cap go re-sign ROR.

Value wise, it's way too difficult to figure out since there are so many different factors. They can trade Matthews anywhere before July 1st, but nobody is giving up huge assets without an extension or without knowing he wants to stay. That is because his NMC will kick in on July 1st. If a team trades huge assets for him and he isn't happy about the destination, they risk being unable to re-sign him and unable to recoup the assets in a trade.

So it comes down to how many teams be is willing to consider as legitimate destinations, and if be will sign at all.
