Description
Obviously, it's hard to gauge what the GM would do until you have one. Gotta put something together for Sid and Geno and maybe Guentzel's last season on board, right? I know you don't want to trade Pickering, but hey... move into the top 10 next month (maybe Reinbacher, Moore, Dvorsky, Leonard, whatchawant?), get some sorely needed game breaking speed and some goals, Krug can perk up an anemic PP, another solid bruiser type young LD who can contribute now if needed even if his ceiling might not be as high as Pickering's? Still plenty of cap to fill out the roster or even upgrade somewhere. Am I speaking your language at all?

Yeah, I really have no idea, so I'm definitely asking and not pushing a trade idea. But no, POJ or Smith won't work for this package. Not what is needed in STL, I'm afraid. Honestly, I felt very constrained trying to arrange a package as the Pens are pretty lean on the things the Blues need. But it's a team Krug would presumably waive for.

eh....that's adding nearly $9M in cap to the penguins. that isn't what they need specially when Krug would be on the second pair. $12M between Krug and Petry... not great specially given term left on Krug.

If blues retain (which not sure why they would) they'd need to take cap back in the deal somewhere (rutta or granlund would be the two options from the pens end).

Right, but you're gonna use cap to solve problems anyway. I doubt the Pens will stop trying to win now. But perhaps the Blues can retain 750K per season.

Right, but I would anticipate they could use that 9M much more efficiently. Graves or Gavrikov could probably come in around $4-5M aav, and a 3C or winger on top of that for $4-5M AAV...

Could also look to trade for Grzelyk or Durzi. I don't know, I see what you're trying to put together, just don't know it makes sense and Vrana is a gamble and I don't think they can gamble right now if they're still going for it all.

A lot of Penguins fans are pretty dead set on going into the season with the LD side being Pettersson/POJ/Smith. If that's the case i'm not sure Krug or Petry would want to play 3rd pair minutes... and if they would go with POJ/Smith that then leaves much more cap for the bottom 6.

Yeah, maybe you could disperse the cap another way, but none of those D-men is gonna boost the power play nearly as much, neither POJ nor Smith have shown they can handle 2nd pairing matchups defensively and don't forget jumping up to #10. It's not an insignificant difference. None of those three other D-men are gonna get you there, either. But thanks for the input.

Btw, who would you really want if you had #10?

The idea of moving up to 10 OA is really intriguing. I would be hoping Zach Benson drops (probably won't), or Ryan Leonard. I also like Vrana and while someone said he is a gamble (I agree), he is a really good player. I think he could do well on Geno's wing. As far as Krug, would you be open to retaining even just 1 million a year? I mean that's probably too much, but it makes the contract a little more digestible. You're right about the powerplay, but I don't know. If this were to happen, I think a trade moving out Petry and/or Granlund would have to be in place.

I would definitely consider it. The big thing holding me back from outright accepting it is Krug's AAV. I can even live with the term - but I'm assuming retention is out of the question? What would the additional cost be if you're open to it?
