Middle-6 Scoring

Description
This lineup is not perfect (debate trade value all you want) but at least it gives them some depth in scoring (that second line is DANGEROUS) and some more puck moving in the defence core. It's a potential way I could see them going if they choose to keep the core intact.

2C candidates I think the Leafs will look at:

Schieffle or Dubois from Winnipeg
Johannsen from Nashville
Hertl from SJ
Schenn from STL
Schmaltz from AZ
Lindholm from Cal
Henrique (if they want a discount option) from ANA

All of those teams are either looking for a retool as well or are moving into rebuilding. I believe most of those guys (teams value players differently) are affordable without moving a core piece.

I like the odds of them being able to help, likely not solve, their RHD in the UFA market and if they can't find a palpatable move for Matt Murray, buying him out is not obscene.

ARI
  1. Muzzin, Jake
Additional Details:
Muzzin is due $2million in real salary after his bonus is paid. That's useful for Arizona to add to their Island of Fake salary cap misfit toys, hence why they are giving up one of their TWELVE picks in the upcoming draft.
2.
WPG
  1. Hirvonen, Roni
  2. Voit, Ty
  3. 2023 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
I know everyone will say "Winnipeg says no and blows up their telephones in anger" but obviously trade value in the league is fluid. This is just for conversations sake, but it's unlikely Scheifele is resigning.

Leafs have been the very unsuccessful trading for upcoming UFAs who actually help them get to the next level. Rather they sign ROR rather them continuous saga of trading futures.

If Muzzin remains on LTIR, there probably isn't a money issue as likely insurance pays for his salary. Makes no difference to the Leafs.

Like the samsonov signing, I think it's fair for both sides off one good season. Could see Haula getting closer to 3.5m in FA. Dumba 100% gets more money in a weak defence FA. Both will likley get mutli year deals. Could give Haula 3.5x 2-3 and not sign Dumba, just have Timmins in the top 6 until trade deadline and upgrade then. Roster looks good overall.

Allows them to operate outside of LTIR meaning additions are easier at the trade deadline and they can accrue cap space. They'd much rather be outside of LTIR then inside if they can avoid it. They may not be able to, but they should at least try.

I am just concerned about ROR's fit, cap hit and length of deal. If they can get below 5 aav for 3 or less years I'd be a fan.

I like some of the trade options I listed above better than ROR, but you're right they cost assets which could hurt the team longterm. A new GM may not be as palpatable to doing that as Dubas might have been. Schmaltz is the acquisition cost is right seems like a slam dunk option, but I'm worried a line of Tavares-Schmaltz-Nylander is going to give back a lot on D.

Which he could waive of course, but that's interesting to me considering he's from Southern Ontario. I would have not assumed that.

If I had my way, I wouldn't resign ROR. The guys they have had on their team and the guys they brought in (besides Schenn) didn't contribute THAT much considering the cost to acquire them.
I'd even go as far as saying I wouldn't mind Matthews or Nylander traded before the season starts, so the Leafs clear the air on their status over if they would resign in 24/25. It's my opinion that Matthews doesn't want to resign with the Leafs.....Eight years or nine years is enough.
Maybe best long term solution is for the Leafs is to go into 24/25 with lots of cap....some young assets or picks from the Matthews/Nylander trades and have a capable GM who knows appreciates the cap and how it works.

Wouldn't mind him as the 2C, if this above is the cost.

We definitely disagree on the best long term solution. I'd much rather have Matthews, Nylander and Marner signed for long-term deals and then continue to build around them. They're all excellent players. It's going to be extremely difficult for the Leafs to add more gamebreaking offensive players since they generally have to be drafted high, and the Leafs won't draft there again anytime soon. I'd hate to lose any.

Totally fine to disagree. I can definitely see the opposite side it's just not what I would want to do. If you asked the Capitals after 8-9 years of Ovi, Kuznetsov etc. if they wanted to bail they might have said yes, but it's worked out for them.
