Trades

CAR
  1. Marner, Mitchell
Additional Details:
The og version of this trade inluded Nikishin in place of Morrow and no 1st round pick. After thinking about it I don't believe Carolina would be willing to part with Nikishin in hopes that he signs with them after his time in Russia. Morrow has been very successful in the NCAA and has tons of upside potential. To make up for the difference between him and Nikishin I felt the 1st rounder was required. Necas is there to fill the spot on the right and with a chance to learn from the offensive talent in Toronto he'll become a very adequate replacement. Martinook provides the Leafs with what many feel they need which is grit. He's also capable of providing points in clutch moments which will benefit Toronto. The last piece of this trade is the cap space. It's been a minute since Toronto has had solid cap relief and they could really use it to bring back some depth pieces and maybe improve upon the goaltending situation.

CAR
  1. Fleury, Haydn
Additional Details:
Defensive depth and for my soul I wanted him back on this team.
TBL
  1. 2023 7th round pick (CAR)
3.
CAR
  1. Yamamoto, Kailer
Additional Details:
Originally I wanted to go after Brock Boeser, however it was brought to my attention that the market on him had gone up more than I had initially thought. So the next logical option was to go after some cheaper options. I chose to trade for Kailer Yamamoto. He's cheaper than Boeser with less upside but still has decent potential under the right structure. Next step was to sign Noel Acciari. He's very solid on the 4th line and can slot in for Yamamoto if he starts to struggle to provide support.

Fast will get between 2-2.5M
Ghost little over 4.5M
Staal could get more in FA market, but I see big possibility of him giving a "hometown" discount

Otherwise IMO trades are well value based. (but idk what Carolina needs and wants, so I wont evaluate this.)

idk i based the staal and fast contract on their exit interviews. staal said he wanted to retire a hurricane and fast said his family loved being in raleigh. as for ghost i kinda just figured the marner trade would be part of negotiations. take the cut to win a cup kinda deal

no to ghost at that price or do you think he wont come back? as for yamamoto i kinda just felt like it was a low risk move. if a change of scenery helps him awesome but if not he can chill in the press box or we can throw him on waivers for a little cap relief heading into the deadline.

Yet we still have a drastic overpayment for Marner. Canes would love to have him, but it’s not realistic whatsoever, unless they sign him in UFA. Canes aren’t going to move roster pieces, and it would have to be a futures based package for Marner. Not to mention, with the Canes cap situation, they would have a hard enough time keeping him at the end of this upcoming season, let alone for the season after. Not to mention, with 2 years remaining on his deal, the Canes have no control over negotiations for a new contract. Besides, Shanahan promised that the core won’t be moved, so Marner isn’t going anywhere until his contract is up.

honestly i feel like any "realistic" trade for marner at this point is gonna be an overpayment. i see your point tho, but just from things i've read if the leafs do trade him the expected package was gonna have to include some roster players. and i figured for the sake of this hypothetical if marner gets you a cup it lessens the sting of not having necas or marty. as for the cap situation i had the thought process that the canes would see where they were at with an aho extension and if that didn't work out focus all attention on marner and work from there. plus staal and burns would be off the books that year too.
