Why trade that pick for a goalie we don't need when you can likely draft a guy like Tre Augustine with it

If that's what Gus will sign for, the Wild will just keep him and go with the same tandem this season. Next year Fleury will be gone and they can go Gus/Wallstedt if he's ready.

IDK, a 1st round pick is a massive overpay for a guy like Gus. I think you take it and run to the UFA market to find a stop gap.

Depends who's available when the offer is made and if they've had a chance to find out. If you can get a dependable veteran on a 2 year deal for under $3.5m, sure you definitely consider taking the pick.

Fleury's days of being a 60+ game starter are over, so you need someone you're absolutely comfortable starting for 50+ games and leaning on come playoff time.

I’m not comfortable with Gus playing 50+ and assuming he’ll be a go to guy in the playoffs, and I’m probably in the minority on that. His biggest issue has apparently been conditioning and that takes *years* to really reap the benefits of. Gus had a good season but if he has a .930 rather than a .950 during that late season stretch we’re not having this conversation.

Gus seems like he’s got a bright future, especially in the Wild system, but I’m not sold he’s closer to a 1A than a backup yet. Goalies are very fickle beasts.

Indeed they are. Sometimes you pay $10m to end up with a 3rd string goalie and then suddenly you're in the Stanley Cup Finals with that same goalie.
