connor isnt a fit. our style is completely reliant on all players pulling their weight on defense with our man to man style. Our style falls apart as soon as someone takes one shift off on defense.

Connor and Niedereiter cost 11.75m, Necas cost 3m. Canes would be much better keeping Necas and then have 8m to spend on a short term UFA, and keep the picks than making the trade.
Undertand the trade though, if you really think Connor is that much better than Necas.

funny that canes seems to acquire either bad or suspisciously defensive players like domi, pulj, pacio burns and ghost. now you may say that they are actually good to play defense or whatever, but you would probably not have said that before the trade. hokcey players will adapt to playstyle, thats their job. Connor would be fine as a cane.

funny enough Burns, Patches, and JP are good defensive players. Im not sure how Puljujarvi is even in the discussion as he has always had really, really good defensive metrics. Either way they other two were added as pure depth pieces that we wouldnt count on to carry the load or player top minutes. We wouldnt pay that much of a price to have Connor just be a depth piece. All of those 5 players were acquired for cheaper than what it would cost for KC. Very low cost and very low risk additions. Low risk additions are fine for non match players. Paying a high price for a player who you would want to play big minutes and wont play defense, it just dumb.

you think coaches like maurice and others havent wanted Connor, Scheifele, and the group to play better 5v5 defense?

fair point that if you get someone for peanuts the risk ia not as high. Connor would never win any selke for sure, but good defensive team will give you good defensive metrics.

i personally just think the canes should try a different strategy. i've been rooting for them for a while and its frustrating that while their cup window is open, they tend to shop their players in the garbage bin. not saying thwy should do this specific deal, but in my mind they need a better offensive threat and should be more agressive in getting one.

We have shopped in the fancy items aisle a couple of times only to be outbid. Generally this team doesn’t believe in paying good assets or money for depth pieces who haven’t played here before. so they shop the clearance aisle hoping to find that good piece that didn’t belong there. No harm in that because, generally, most GMs get into trouble with the cap because they overspend for depth pieces that don’t work. Marchment is our exception as were giving him 4 x 4.5.

Our model is 1 on 1 hockey with 5 players on D. We don’t teach or worry about zones with our defenders like most teams. Adding someone like Connor kills the system.
