Complete hypothetical

Description
Hypothetically, the Sharks really want to get rid of the Vlasic's contract, this is how a trade could go down

Hope my explanation for the conditions make sense (and are actually possible cause this would be kinda cool to see)
Trades
MTL
  1. Vlasic, Marc-Édouard
  2. 2023 1st round pick (SJS)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Vlasic makes 7m for the next 2 years. Would cost a bunch to offload
SJS
  1. 2023 1st round pick (MTL)
  2. 2024 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Habs move up from 3 to 4 in 2023

2024 picks are treated like swap picks. For example, Sharks finish with the 5th pick and the Habs with 9th, Habs swap 1st with the Sharks, so the Habs would now have 5 and Sharks with 9. It would be a maximum of 10 spots to swap with 1st overall being protected. If it is longer than 10 spots or 1st overall (so Habs at 17 and Sharks at 4), Sharks have a choice to swap 1st round picks either way or give the Habs a top 5 protected 2025 1st rounder and the Habs send the lowest of 2025 1st (MTL and CAL) unless they are both above the Sharks 2025 1st in which the Habs send their 2025 2nd

Your not asking a lot to take on such a large cap dump so to be honest I don’t see MTL doing this, but at the same time sharks aren’t trying to compete so his deal isn’t hurting us. So I am assuming Vlasic ends up retiring as a shark or gets bought out in 24 or 25.

Realistically, there's no reason to get rid of Vlassic's contract. We don't have any big contracts to sign and every dollar the cap goes up makes fitting that 7m easier for SJ. Montreal is one of the teams he might waive to go to, but SJ has no reason to want to trade him. Yes he eats a lot of cap... cap that we don't really need next year or probably in 2024-25 either. Especially if other big names are on the move like EK65 or even Hertl. If we need cap a buyout is a significantly better option than trading premium draft capital.

Yeah that makes sense. I was mostly thinking maybe this could be an owner decision. Like be as close tot he floor as possible while we rebuild since the Sharks arent exactly a premier market

On the Habs end, this allows them to play with as much compete as they want. The roster isnt good enough to make the playoffs but better than 5th worse. The sharks roster is kinda bad, the pick swap would be like the Habs at 13th and the Sharks at 5, which is an expensive jump up. So thats where the value for the Habs comes from.

That sharks 2024 1st is likely top 5 again, I don’t see them moving that to move a contact that really doesn’t help the team much. If it was for a bonafide star sure but not to move out a contract that could simply be bought out while moving down in the 1st round this year and next year

It's an interesting trade, but the Sharks don't need to move Vlasic.

Also, that 2024 pick is likely to be a good one. We suck.
