Edvinsson will be one of our LHD once he's done recovering - if not him, Johansson.

I agree. I signed and traded for two right defensemen and signed a depth guy that can play both sides (and is from the area). I don't think any of these guys change what happens with Edvinsson. Gotta have depth. I think Cole would be a good fit, but maybe he's still too good for that role. If so, I would look for another similar option that can fill in on either side in the bottom pairing if needed, but that I wouldn't expect to block out a prospect who deserves it. Every year we end up playing a LOT of different guys on defense.

I think signing Cole just complicates things. We do need depth, but getting guys that we know will barring both Edvinsson and Johannson get injured/suspended; just a waste of cap.

I think DET will just figure out 1 RHD, and let Chariot play on his off hand next season. It could be Severson, Pionk, Durzi, etc, but it'll just be 1. With Edvinsson, Johansson, Willander, et al coming, Steve won't want to load up too much on 4/5/6/7 dmen.

Chiarot is bad enough on the left, but you might be right.
