There's enough room for everyone. Especially if the cap goes up 3m instead of 1m.

If they felt this was going to happen and they weren't willing to match 4m, they would just trade him. Someone would give them more than a second, or at least a player to help them win now.

Bettman wants to shut it down, but the owners work for him, not the other way around. For once the middle tier GM's are getting hamstrung and need the cap to go up.
The players will likely be short 90m.
Should the cap only go up 1m this season, it likely jumps 8m the following. And bettman knows that will be terrible.

He's shutting down that talk because theres alot of reports the owners are not happy. And while usually its only the rangers/leafs who want the cap to keep jumping, right now you have middle tier financial teams like Dal/Van etc who represent large tv markets, who need the cap to jump.
