Gallagher has almost no value right now. He is expensive, and often injured, so at best his highest value, currently, is as a potential LTIR cap relief guy. So, for the Jets, they would get an administrative project in Gallagher, a top six center in Lindholm, who probably would not re-sign with the Jets, and so a one year thing, Chris Tanev, who would honestly upgrade their D by a not insignificant margin, and the 5th overall pick.... but losing their top two centermen in Scheifele and Dubois*, plus "nobody knows where he can actually fit when he's at his best" Mason Appleton and their own 1st.

*Yes Dubois wants out, and will get traded, but I meant that he, plus Scheifele and the other assets will get better than this, collectively.

Let's put it this way, play NHL 23 franchise mode (and don't be a pussycat and play with player morale on), and then trade away your leadership, and when your team inexplicably collapses season after season, you'll see why you don't trade guys like this, even if they're overpaid.

"But NHL 23 franchise mode isn't like real life", no, but it's just an analogy and it's a very potent analogy. This is one of the most realistic things in the game. Your locker room needs character, and you're happy to pay an extra three million for a guy who's essentially the plug at the bottom of the sink making sure it is able to contain water. Gallagher's example on the team is in itself worth what he's overpaid. Cultural leaders are EVEN MORE important in real life than they are in that game.
