Habs Development Draft and Off-Season

Created by: Habitant514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2023
Published: Jun. 12, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
D-core will rotate often, hopefully we can stay healthy this year. Carlsson goes 5th (Bedard, Fantilli, Michkov, Smith before him). I would like to see us dress 14/6 regularly with Pezz, Gally and Gurianov (who will be released and then resigned at a lower amount) being scratched often. Laval is going to be fun to play in this year as well, with Hutson, Pitlick, Evans etc.

Leo Carlsson isn't available at 5th OA
Joshua Roy is not NHL ready
MTL aren't getting rid of Hoffman with picks when they are rebuilding
WPG don't want to rebuild, so I doubt the trade would be around two 1st round picks
Xhekaj is a #6-7 dman, why is he on the 1st pairing playing against other teams 1st line when he has a hard time against 3rd & 4th line ?
I highly doubt Condotta, Teasdale, Beaudin all get two years deals

- I predict draft will be bedard, fantiilli, michkov, smith, carlsson. That's very plausible. Carlsson is similar to Slaf in that he was oversized for his league and dominated because of it. He is the least skilled of the 5, and that is what people are focusing on.
- Roy is definitely ready, his defensive game and awareness has developed extremely quickly. Get him working with MSL and Nichols asap.
- Hoffman isn't key to the rebuild at all, he doesn't insulate the young group or teach good habits, just had a baby and is not ultra competitive. Arizona needs warm bodies, has way too many picks and his shot will help sell a few more tickets.
- 2x 1st Round Picks could get you a lot in this league, WPG is in a terrible position, Armia has some upside that would interest a team like them and he plays a similar brand already.
- Xhekaj is so under-rated, especially his transition game. Get him the minutes and experience now when it doesn't matter. He will protect Caul and the other smaller players moving forward.

I think it's also implied by the fact that I didn't use "Scratches" that the D lines will shift quite a bit

EDIT: made changes so it's clearer now.

Dude, CBJ want a Center, Carlsson is the clear cut #3. Will Smith & Matvei Michkov could drop, not Carlsson
Roy isn't ready lmao, every ****ing year people think the 19 yo prospects are ready but they are not
Hoffman helps the tank and might bring assets at the TDL. Hoffman is owed 5M, ARI don't have the money, they want cheap contract in real money.
Xhekaj is overrated as ****, he is a #6-7 dman, his first pass isn't good. Matheson Guhle & Harris are years ahead of him
I would rather have Xhekaj than Kovacevic tho

Have you not seen the news in the last week about PLD and him giving the Jets multiple teams to negotiate with?

That offer for PLD is flat out the worst I've seen so far. Thought I had seen bad, but this takes bad to a whole new bad level.

“You think of the progression he made in six months; the progressions that he’s made have really put him in a position as one of the very best drafted players outside the NHL,” said Button regarding Roy’s rapid development since the summer of 2021.

Disagree about Xhekaj. Go back and watch the film. His Corsi is better than Guhle's, and Guhle is excellent which is saying something. Harris and Kovacevic will be given a fair shot at proving themselves but will ultimately be traded in the next 2 seasons.

Go check out the news before you post. See Jeff Marek and PLD's agent working with the Jets and naming 5 or so teams to negotiate with.

Ya ain't gettin him for free or a bad offer.

Xhekaj can't make a nice pass on the tape, always being the guy or too far
Button doesn't know **** about hockey, he is dumb as ****
I like Roy, but he will play in Laval next year

2x 1st round draft picks and solid 4th liner for a player will give you 25 goals and some physicality in the playoffs (if he feels like it) for one year seems very fair. Montreal will not be giving him 9M a year, he know that so it's not as if he is going to go out of his way to prove himself worthy of a higher salary when he ultimately signs with the habs.

I added Harris to the trade. This makes it more than fair, he is an excellent prospect.

AZ not trading a 2nd and 3rd to get 33yo winger @ 5m for a year. this makes zero sense

Arizona has way too many picks, they acquired half of them to trade - they would never draft that many players. They need to meet cap minimum and Hoffman still has some game left in him and can play on their power play. Both teams win in this scenario.

Was just reading about Carlsson and he has been mostly been playing on the wing this year. Not a natural C, but we will see.

AZ has too many picks for sure, the GM has stated he plans on using them to move up in rounds, get prospects, or get young change of scenery guys. They are well above floor once the 9/10 roster spots get filled (only 4 mil below now), 5 are RFAs. Not saying hoffman isnt still a good useful player at all, but AZ not makin playoff in 24' and not making even with him, rather play an young guy see what they got. If AZ going to get bottom 6 I'd rather try Yamamoto (or similiar), young, low risk (one year 3 m) but could take off and if so be a piece moving forward. Also why would hoffman at this point in career want to play on rebuild for one year.

You just learned today that Carlsson played on the wing this year … tells a lot about your hockey knowledge. Carlsson played on the wing because he is 18 yo and the SHL is a man league. But he is a natural center

First things first : How tf does arizona wants, hoffman, especially at that price? Maybe, but maybe, they add him for like a 5th but even there thats not a good fit
Second : That's wayy to much for Dubois, the most likely is fla 2023 1rst+Kidney+Dvo and maybe a sweetner (like a Kapanen or a 3rd?) and even then it's overpriced due to the context
Third : If you want to take a longshot at a prospect to made the roster, i could see Heinaman, not Roy yet
4rth : It's unlikely that Carlsson will be avaible, but i wont count that off, anaheim or san jose could go Michkov but if that happened it's more likely W. Smith
5th : You will need to add a bith of depth bcause injuries and for in case the rookies are not ready
