Lindholm sign and trade

Created by: bcooke
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 15, 2023
Published: Jun. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Word out of CGY is they will have decision on extension or sign and trade sometime before draft night. Scenario for if Lindholm wants a sign and trade with Avs being on the list.

Base on a '24-'25 cap projection, 8x9M is the highest the Avs can go on Lindholm. If Landy comes off LTIR next summer, that would leave the Avs with around 8.5M to fill 7 roster spots without trading anyone. Manson would be the most likely guy to move next summer to open up more space.

Added Behrens and Kovalenko on ELC's as I expect them both to sign at the end of next season. Kovalenko should be with the NHL club in April for the cup run. Behrens should sign when DU's season is over and join the AHL club.

Trades
1.
COL
  1. Lindholm, Elias
Additional Details:
Lindholm extends 8x9. Not really worried about the back end of this contract. Several key pieces of the Avs core are right around the same age as Lindholm.
CGY
  1. Newhook, Alex [RFA Rights]
  2. Toews, Devon
  3. 2023 1st round pick (COL)
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Worked off the Tkachuk to FLA trade for value of a sign and trade. Tkachuk is better than Lindholm, but being a center brings the value closer. CGY could extend Toews similar to what they did with Weegar, or 3rd team could get involved to take Toews and send CGY a better fit that is equal in value.
2.
COL
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (PIT)
  2. 2023 5th round pick (LAK)
  3. 2025 4th round pick (LAK)
LAK
  1. Francouz, Pavel
Additional Details:
Similar to the Georgiev trade from last summer. LAK or someone else looking for a good goalie on the cheap for draft picks. Francouz would make sense for any team looking to go to a true tandem in net.
3.
TOR
  1. 2023 5th round pick (COL)

Why would Toronto throw away Timmins for a 5th? He’s 24, 6’2” RHD, and had 14 points in 25 games while looking very good. His injuries set him back but if he can stay healthy, he’s a player. I doubt Toronto moves him.

They're not tanking, they're gonna have a great year because they missed the playoffs last year. Thats what they do... miss playoffs, good year, miss playoffs, good year etc.

not without a first line center they aren't lol. You do realize Toews makes a good NHLer a healthy scratch on Calgary. More defense is the last thing the Flames need

No way you're serious. He'd be absolutely great in CGY. We also get 2 1sts and Newhook. You take that and run! Towes in CGY makes just about any D expandable. We could trade Hanifin or Tanev and Zadorov for futures, and have an awesome D in the meantime.

At the cost of Lindholm? You are crazy. Calgary could add Karlsson but loosing Lindholm and we are a bottom 10 team in the league

I think you over-value Lindholm. He didn't create much of his own offense this year. He was good defensively, but he wasn't a guy I was expecting to take over a game last year. In addition, he has a hard time shutting down Elite centers, which is why Backlund often gets that assignment. You could use some of the futures and go after Schiefele, or PLD. You can even sign ROR. If Kadri has a better year the Flames would be just fine.

That trade makes them a lot better, both in the present and the future.

Agree to disagree then. Lindholm had a very bad year and our team suffered from that. The dropoff to Kadri as 1C is not even remotely made up for by the upgrade from Hanifin to Toews

Yeah I don't mind disagreeing on that one. I personally view Toews as a borderline elite D, and a big reason his pairing with Makar works so well. The Flames getting 2 more top assets is just gravy for me.

I view Toews as about on par with Weegar. He's a great defenseman but Calgary is already a top 3 defensive team in the league
