Trying to figure out who to scratch if Landy can play in the playoffs is a great problem to have. And depth in the playoffs is never a problem. Need a solid group of 13/14/15 F's to make it through and withstand injuries.

^This. I think having around $5M in cap space means they have one more big piece in mind. Would not be surprised by either Guentzel or Lindholm.

Reports are PIT wants a 1st, NHL caliber player, and a top prospect. Prospect would have to be Behrens, Gulyayev, or Ritchie. Meyers fits as an NHL caliber player, but would likely have to add more to match other offers. Not sure what all pieces it would take, but Avs are reportedly in on Guentzel. And he fits nicely without retention.

Figured Henrique being a rental would cost around a 2nd with retention. And RyJo will probably cost us somewhere between a 3rd and a 5th to dump. Since Anaheim is one of the few places with capspace to absorb RyJo, thought it might make sense to combine the value and just bump the 2nd to a 1st. But may have to add another low value pick or prospect as the 1st will be late.

Then for the henrique rental I'd trade a 2nd at most and a prospect. A 1st is an overpayment for a rental. You might as well get lindholm if you go the rental route</div></div>
Agree that Henrique retained is probably a 2nd at most. Bumped it to a first to dump RyJo as I don't know that he as much value even at $4M. He helps a team get to the cap floor next year and if he pops with more ice time in another system, they can flip him for more picks.

Forward Projecting Rooster
The cap will be a maximum of $87.675M unless the league and the PA agree to remove the CBA rule restricting cap growth to 5% per year. PA would probably love to get that restriction removed and get the cap up to $96.875M based on Bettman's $6.2B HRR number from last summer. But I'd be shocked if the owners agree to lift that restriction entirely. Expect the cap to fall somewhere between those two numbers next year depending on how negotiations between the owners and PA go.

I say we sign these guys
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Xqb15a</b></div><div>I love how guys throw up JFresh cards with no context or understanding how they work. Tatar is listed and ranked against 3rd liners Kane against 1st liners. But tell me why the entire NHL has passed on signing Tatar, when I can tell you Kane is going sign where he wants to. But tell me again why every team in the league has passed on Tatar, I know why Kane hasn’t signed because he isn’t ready. Tatar is the ultimate tease, he starts to have a nice regular season convinced he is finally going to do something in the playoffs then never, ever does a thing.</div></div>
I agree that JFresh cards are often used without context/understanding. However, the percentiles are not tied to what line players are on. Percentiles compare the player to all other players at the same position (forward/defense/goaltending - it does not differentiate between LW/C/RW or LD/RD) regardless of TOI. The TOI indicator would be better off just listing the actual TOI instead of converting to a line equivalent.
Tatar is likely still available because he and his agent went looking for a market that wasn't there. Likely wanting to still be paid in the $5M AAV range and he will have to settle for less.

I think Manson is easier/cheaper to replace in the short run. So I expect him to be moved first if Toews is extended. And honestly, I think both are moved by the time Gulyayev is ready to come over from the KHL.
Envisioning a D-core that looks something like this 3-4 years from now:
Toews - Makar
Gulyayev - Byram
Behrens - RH Soucy/Gudas Type Vet (Big Physical D on cheaper AAV than Manson)

This is kind of what I expect. Remaining roles can likely be filled fairly cheaply. Doubt Annunen is ready to be a 1A, but I would think he is in line to be 1B with another goalie aquired that comes in cheaper than what Georgiev is going to get in his next contract. One of Girard or Manson gets moved to extend Toews.

I would expect a healthy Manson means the Avs have 5 guys getting Top 4 minutes. And then take your pick of JJ/Malinski/Hunt picking up the remaining ~10 minutes of ice time.

Jean Luc Foudy. AHL allstar with the majority of his time in Loveland spent at RW. Fast enough to skate with anyone on the roster, good forecheck, solid playmaker to balance out the line with Wood and Colton. And the added bonus that you can send him back to Loveland when Kovalenko shows up in March.

Crazy idea
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyManiac95</b></div><div>I think the pairs should be:
Toews/Makar
Girard/Byram
JJ/Manson
In that order, Byram is a RD, cause he belongs on the 2nd line. So does Girard tho. Ok so either could be either side. Still tho, do we really want JJ all 82 games (if he can stay healthy thru all of them)? I don't, and he's a LD. So, they need another actual roster player vs a depth D like Hunt and MacDermid</div></div>
Expected minutes if everyone is healthy
Makar 25
Toews 25
Byram 22
Girard 20
Manson 18
Leaves JJ or whoever is 6D with 10 minutes to fill. JJ Hunt and MacD have shown they can reliably fill 10 minutes a night as needed during the regular season. And JJ/Hunt can play up as needed to cover injuries. Another depth D would be fine, but they already have 15 D signed between NHL and AHL.
If they do add another D, my preference would be Bear. RD that would be an immediate upgrade at 6D as soon as he is healthy enough to come off LTIR.

That is my thought as well. Only concern is Drouin, but I am fairly confident that will work and Drouin will be among the league leaders in points per dollar.

Going to guess that they split MacK and Rantanen this year. JT Compher had a career high in points playing next to Rantanen for large portions of the year and getting time on PP1. RyJo is a better offensive player than JTC, so if he gets the same opportunity, he should outperform what Compher did last season (17-35-52). If he is healthy all year, 52 points for 4 mil is just fine. Any improvement over JTC's total is value added.

Roster projection
I just don't get the hate Meyers gets. IMO, he was incredibly unlucky at the NHL level last year. Of all the guys that got 25+ games, he had the highest xGF% on the roster and the lowest actual GF%. His xGoals/60 was 1st and Goals/60 was 6th on the roster. These rate stats are inflated by the fact that he had similar ice time to MacDermid so with an expanded role, I would expect them to drop a bit. The lack of assists correlates with the fact that pucks just didn't go in the net when he was on the ice. In his 360 minutes last year, the difference between his +/- and expected +/- was 10 goals. Some of those were high danger chances that Meyers failed to convert on, but many were chances that linemates failed to convert on that would have been assists. In his AHL time, he put up 6-18-24 in 30 games for nearly a PPG, so its not like he doesn't generate chances.
If he gets an extended look (60-70 GP, ~650 minutes) and even average puck luck I fully expect Meyers to put up 10-15-25.

Thread:
Get rid of MacDermid
MacDermid's value is twofold. He has the ability to fill the 13th F/7th D with 1 roster spot which has allowed them to run their preferred 21 man roster and accumulate capspace. They have better options in the AHL that can be called up to fill long term injury (Hunt/JLF/etc). Additionally, he is one of the hardest working players on the roster. It helps the Avs set the culture they want when the bottom guy on the roster is the first guy on the ice and last guy off the ice at practice and doesn't complain about playing time.
I think he loses a lot of the value he brings now that they will be forced to use LTIR for the whole season and won't have the ability to accumulate capspace.
His 1M isn't hurting the roster construction. The only player he is preventing them from signing is Tarasenko. And Tarasenko would be a luxury at this point. Suter is the better fit for what this roster needs. Avs need one more guy that can kill penalties and play both wing and center. It would give them the flexibility to move Colton up to the second line if Drouin falters or there is an injury.
