I say we sign these guys

Created by: Anus_McLeod
Team: 2023-24 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2023
Published: Aug. 21, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Maybe Kovalenko knocks someone out of the lineup when he comes over, but it's probably more likely someone is injured and he just replaces them.

Johnson plays until Bear heals up. Malinski can also get some games between now and then.

Note that more money is available if they're willing to waive McDermid, but I'm being optimistic here.

I would avoid Kane like the plague, especially given his injury. He is not a fraction of the player he once was, and even a minor injury at his age could end his career.

If Tatar is willing to sign for 2m, that's where I'd put my money.

I'd rather take the slight gamble on a guy coming back from injury than go with one who is all but guaranteed to disappear come playoff time. I used to think Tatar would be a good add, but after another letdown when it counts, I have very little interest.

I'd agree at his previous salary, which is no doubt why the Devils chose to move on from him, but at a bottom six salary of 2m it seems hardly a problem.

its crazy how tatar has been bad pretty much his whole career in the playoffs, love the guy but i've never seen anything quite like it.

Yeah I probably went too black and white with my very little interest remark. If Tatar is cheap, then maybe I'm open. I'd have some other players ahead of him though. He'd be like plan c or lower.

@drambui
Agree. I had some concerns before but made some room for it being just one of those outlier kind of things. After last year, I think it may just be who he is.

I mean it really is insane. Normally I think the notion of a "playoff performer" or non-performer is ridiculous given the small sample size of the playoffs, but I'd have to think Tatar's consistent disappearance in the postseason is statistically significant now.

Surely you jest. Tatar rivals David Copperfield in disappearances particularly the playoffs. The only thing that matters to COL is winning in the playoffs and Tatar doesn’t do anything in the playoffs.

And we still want Landy back after a comparable injury?

Tatar would be great too

Landy is a number of years younger and is under contract so you don't have a choice

I mean we kinda do. Buyouts and trades exist. Not saying we're going to, but hypothetically, we could

Sure, but there's a difference between a career-crippling injury to a player under contract and the same injury to a UFA. Signing Kane is totally voluntary, but you have no choice but to deal with Landeskog if he doesn't LTIRetire

He wasn't at 100%. But that aside, Kane has proven himself and then some over his career. He might be on the down slope as a result of injury and age, but we have seen him perform to the tune of 3 Cups and one Smythe. The risk there is whether he's healthy.

The risk is that he's 34 and showing major signs of decline over the last 2+ years, not just that he's injured. It's extremely improbable that he is ever an impact player again.

How are the three cups his team won 8-13 years ago at all relevant anyway? First of all, it's a team sport, and second of all he's 34 years old and viscerally not good anymore

He was arguably the best player on that team, and they're relevant because it shows he does perform when it matters most.

Yes he has declined, but he's not going to be the focal point in Colorado. He can play second banana to guys like MacKinnon, Makar, and Rantanen, which is probably the best situation for him at this stage of his career. He's still a good player. He won't be the guy who won a Hart, but he could be an impact addition to the top six imo.

Bro Tatar has disappeared in the playoffs EVERY year. 7 seasons playing in the playoffs 3 scoring 1 point or less. 52 playoff games 13points. Last year in the playoffs Tatar managed a massive one point in 12 games, Kane had 6 points in 7 games and was hurt. Do I like the guy no, but saying Tatar over Kane at the same cap hit is crazy.

So you're saying instead of a player who will give you 82 good games and then disappear in the playoffs, you'd rather have a guy who's currently injured, won't play well when he's back, and will continue to suck in the playoffs?

"Kane had 6 points in 7 games and was hurt."

Half of them were secondary assists, half were on the power play, and most of them were in one game. Not to mention, points aren't everything. Most of Tatar's value last year came from high-end defensive impact.

I’ll take the guy that produces in the playoffs and drives play all day over a guy who disappears. COL needs guys to produce in the playoffs because honestly who cares what they do in the regular season as long as they make the playoffs.

I love how guys throw up JFresh cards with no context or understanding how they work. Tatar is listed and ranked against 3rd liners Kane against 1st liners. But tell me why the entire NHL has passed on signing Tatar, when I can tell you Kane is going sign where he wants to. But tell me again why every team in the league has passed on Tatar, I know why Kane hasn’t signed because he isn’t ready. Tatar is the ultimate tease, he starts to have a nice regular season convinced he is finally going to do something in the playoffs then never, ever does a thing.

I agree that JFresh cards are often used without context/understanding. However, the percentiles are not tied to what line players are on. Percentiles compare the player to all other players at the same position (forward/defense/goaltending - it does not differentiate between LW/C/RW or LD/RD) regardless of TOI. The TOI indicator would be better off just listing the actual TOI instead of converting to a line equivalent.

Tatar is likely still available because he and his agent went looking for a market that wasn't there. Likely wanting to still be paid in the $5M AAV range and he will have to settle for less.

Percentiles are ranked out of all forwards. They also played against the same quality of opponents.

Tatar faced 70th percentile competition with 75th percentile teammates
Kane faced 76th percentile competition with 74th percentile teammates

They faced practically the same difficulty of competition with the same quality of teammates, except Kane had more TOI and was among the worst players in the league.

Don't accuse me of not knowing my stuff
