If moving up doesnt work

Created by: ColonelX
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2023
Published: Jun. 16, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this universe, obviously there isn't a PLD trade but this ends up being the final trade:

5OA (Michkov)
31OA (Gauthier, Dragicevic)
40OA (Strabel, Strbk)

For

8OA (Leonard, Reinbacher, Benson)
22OA (Perreault, Sale, Musty/High upside with flaws)
2025 2nd (Easily flippable to 2024)

Is it the best return? No, I'd much rather have Washington's next 1st with top 10 protection but don't think they bite. Neither think Detroit bites and sends their 9OA and 17OA.
Is it a return good enough to get out of the whole Michkov thing if other GMs are aware you're out on him? Yes. Drop three spot at the top yet still get a guy you would've picked at 5 anyways because you don't want the Russian kid, plus gaining 9 spots at the end of the first is pretty good.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2023 1st round pick (WSH)
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (WSH)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Montreal drops back a little to gain a pair of 2nd rounders. They skip the whole Michkov debacle and can pick whoever of Leonard, Reinbacher, Benson or Dvorsky is left on the board (All players that are being of interest for Montreal).

The 2025 pick is there because Washington doesn't own their 2024, a 25 can be moved closer a year to any team with a 4th as a sweetener, see MTL-TBL trade for Jack Finley, so it's not much of a dealbreaker for me. No we don't get another 1st to drop down but hearing all the noise that Montreal isn't interested in Michkov, this isn't a bad trade.
WSH
  1. 2023 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Base off Toronto-NYI trade in 2008. 5OA for 7OA, 68OA and future 2nd.
Michkov comes in when Ovechkin retire, he also fits Washington's next wave timeline of Strome, Sandin, Alexeyev, Lapierre, Miroshnichenko and Fehérváry.

Washington isn't dropping a ton of draft capita on this one so they don't handicap themselves too much but they use their already high pick to jump up and select their guy.
2.
MTL
  1. 2023 1st round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Hughes jumps up in the first round to get a guy he sees falling to the early twenty's. Keeping their early 2nd pick for a goalie is needed so jumping higher than 22 is unlikely.
PHI
  1. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Based off Toronto-Anaheim trade in 2011. 22OA for 30OA and 39OA.

Briere has already started to move pieces and he for sure isn't done. He'll get his gem at the top of this year's draft but, at this moment, lacks any picks in the 2nd and first half of the 3rd round so trading back a little to regain some capita where it mathers (Gems are always found in the early second round) could be a sound plan. Philly doesn't have a top tier pool so getting some quantity this year isn't a bad thing.
3.
MTL
  1. Goligoski, Alex
  2. 2024 1st round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Left field idea taking into account that Goligoski lifts his NMC to come over. Not much of a stretch as *(Possibility A) he's unlikely to play in Minny and that for a guy at the end of his career, putting a Habs jersey could be a fullfilled dream even if for only one game, *(Possibility B) he's getting bought out anyways. Even if he's over 35, his contract is made in a way that makes it buyout-able at a price of 666k for a pair of years.

A first is certainly a price to pay but when you take into account the dump, the retained money and the player given I think it's worth it for Minny.
*Top whatever protected but the team is almost a lock to make it in the playoffs now that Winnipeg's gonna lose everyone.
MIN
  1. Edmundson, Joel ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Convinced Eddy's gone by the end of the offseason, we simply have too many LDs and being on an expiring deal is going to be tempting to other GMs especially while Montreal can hold salary. Eddy's built for the playoffs and showed toward the end of the year that he's fully healthy (No reports since the end of the season that he's had any back problems).

At the cost of 0$ cap hit and saving 850k$ of real money if the deal is made after the signing bonus is given, the Wild moves an overpaid 8th D out and obtains a top four guy. We've seen in these playoffs that being big and tall in the backend is needed and as it stands now, half of Minny's defenders under contracts are 6 feet or under.

Probably depends how the draft goes if they would do it but that's definitely something that the flyers should/would consider

Lol this is so bad! Minnesota isn't taking on your cap dump or Ld they have no need for. They aren't parting with a 1st to rid of Alex and Alex isn't waiving. So no chance from both Minnesota Wild & Alex

This is what I think a pick swap with Montreal and the Caps would look like
