dude sharks are starting a rebuild. this is maybe the ideal or dream return for karlsson although in any trade with Buffalo I would think sharks push HARD for Savoie given we know they really wanted him in 2022

This trade has zero no doubt star power in return for SJS. "with potential" isn't a great trade chip! SJS will be looking for young stars they can build around, not players with questionable futures.

dang bro I didn't know you were an insider. Where do you get this info from? the meier trade? Shakir is only people. Savoie is a lil monster and one the sharks rate highly and we get a high draft pick to select a player that the sharks like. this is probably close to if not the best return we could ask for

Savoie isn't even in the trade proposal LOL. Tell me 1 person in this trade proposal that comes anywhere close to a #1 draft pick? You're completely speculating on all players but the 1 player who is actually considered an NHLer. The 13th overall pick has value. Ostlund still has value but no NA pro experience. Luukkonen isn't turning any heads, he's struggling(SJS would be asking for Levi). Jokiharju is a depth Dman forced to play top mins who's had a lot of injury history for a 24 year old who's underperformed. The 2024 2nd rd pick wouldn't get you 1 year of $5.75M retained let alone 4 years equaling $23M!

The Meier trade isn't comparable at all! He had 1 year remaining before a qualifying offer of $10M which was the reason he was traded. Karlsson is very likely winning the Norris, has 4 years remaining and wants to go to a CONTENDER! He has control of where he goes!

Karlsson controlling where he goes limits his value, as does the length of his contract, as does his injury record. The comment to which I first replied to you in said this was a good proposal but sharks would probably prefer to take Savoie if they could because I know they were high on him at the 2022 draft. Also because you could not grasp the sarcasm in the last reply I was not actually talking about a 1st overall pick. This offer is both in line with what the sharks asked for before in the meier deal, and just about the best return the sharks could hope to get in the circumstances.

You can't seem to grasp what the ask for is to retain $23M... They don't pay that in Monopoly money!

It's a lot of money, for sure. SJS screwed themselves by signing him for that much money for that long. $23M << $46M. We can understand that right? Spending $46mm for a player that doesn't help them get to the playoffs (no player will, the roster is old and overpaid) doesn't make much sense. SJS will need to retain at least a good portion of the contract in order to move him.

The Burns trade is a good reference point.

Burns (34% retained) + Pederson <> Lorentz + Makiniemi + 3rd

SJS got hosed. Karlsson may fetch a bit more, but most teams just cannot fit his contract at almost any dollar amount. He's just not worth that much despite winning another Norris.

Someone still has to pay half his salary. That's real money, not just his cap hit that SJS can eat while they tank.

When you add up the player you're getting(Norris winning elite playmaking Dman with 4 years left + $23M in cap retention + $19.5M in actual paid salary) this proposal just isn't enough. There is no one mentioned coming from BUF that is a lock to be excited about!

Burns has $2.7M cap retention on a front loaded $8M deal. He was the cheapest of the 3 highly paid Dmen in SJ that they had to move, hence Burns being moved 1st.

but Krlsson does not have the worth. 13th overall is plenty to be excited about especially if it turns into Simashev or ASP

There's a lot of ifs in this thread that no team is going to pay $19.5M cash + lose their best offensive player + retain $23M in cap to just guess on. This is simply a bad trade proposal. Karlsson would veto this trade in a heartbeat too. He wants to contend, not be in trade rumors again next summer.

buffalo will probably be a playoff team next year, and each year the rest of Karlsson's contract. also simashev and ASP both have 1 d potential. Youre too high on the market for EK and looking at it without considering other teams constraints... most teams in on Karlsson are up against the cap, and I dont think buffalo is one because he doesn't match what they need stylistically. So a deal where the sharks take on little to no cap coming back, get another goalie who might be good but is inexpensive is fine, the 13th overall pick which you are picking a top defensive prospect with (sharks need real bad), and another excellent center prospect although I would prefer to get Savoie back in this trade. It doesn't make any sense for the sharks to want bonafide NHL'ers because all that would be available in a trade for EK do not match our current timeline

*Edit* AND this also sets us up to chase another top 5 prospect in next years draft which would put us near the high end of NHL prospect pools depending on who graduates this year. Smith Eklund 13 pick 2023 and Top 5 2024 pick. you gotta look past this year in the trade

Do you think Karlsson is getting better? No one else does. He's getting old. That's the part you seem to be missing.
