Hanifin

Created by: kscoop
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 19, 2023
Published: Jun. 19, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Putting a lot of trust in rookies Lysell and Merkulov but no better way to learn than playing on a line with Bergeron and Marchand. Similar for Merkulov as he gets to play with defensively responsible players in Coyle and Brown. The trade for Hanifin would be a good one for both teams. Calgary gets a high scoring winger that will probably be willing to re-sign long term in Debrusk and Frederic who can play an effective role on line 3. Bruins get local boy Hanifin and have an incredible top 4. Forward group maybe lacking some scoring depth but this is the reality of the salary cap.

EDIT: Signed OEL and demoted Mcglaughlin. Sweeney has always liked OEL and OEL always liked Boston. Could be an easy add at 1 million.

I don't think Lysell will be ready for the start of the year unless he has a REALLY good training camp. He fell off pretty hard the second half of the year in Providence. I think you're going to need to find another middle 6 wing/center option, especially because Bergeron probably retires.

I would hate to lose both DeBrusk and Hall. I like signing Bertuzzi but 6 years scares me, he's going to be 29 and really only had one good year where he scored 30 goals.

I'd also like to deal Grz and find a league minimum guy for 3LD that gives room for Lohrei to get some reps. Also Zboril can play his offside but he is by no means good at it.

I like this one not going to lie. Devils wins that trade a lot though. Ulmark is worth more than that at the moment. Buffalo might be interested in getting him back if you want to get rid off him. They have too much talents in the system and could feel the need to trade some before their value regresses. Savoie and next year’s first maybe?

Hall doesnt have that value and even less so for a cap strapped Bruins team.

I don't know if that's enough for Hanifin. It's close, but its probably lacking a 1st round pick.

Since being traded to Boston, Hall has 111pts in 158gp. That's good for a 57pt pace over an 82 game season. Since when is a fringe 60pt player not worth a 2nd & 3rd? Boston doesn't have to trade Hall at all, so the "cash strapped" point is irrelevant. The only way the "need" to move Hall is if they re-sign Bertuzzi. If they do that then they'll already have a trade lined-up for Hall.

Been waiting for something like this from a Bruins fan that has all these components:

1) Ullmark trade to a team that could use him to take it to the next level
2) Hanifin trade (was thinking Hall until I saw that DeBrusk is getting shopped again for Hanifin swap.
3) Bertuzzi signing

I would say that Carolina's management is greedy and that they wouldn't pay that much for Hall like @ecupirate07 suggested, and they will likely want him for anywhere from 3rd+4th as low as FCs. I don't think they would want a sweetener considering that signing Bertuzzi is a choice. The Anaheim trade is probably not ideal but maybe there's a team out there willing to do that deal.

That being said great job taking into account the other teams needs.

Only thing that might be missing that I could see happen is an OEL signing but with Hanifin, maybe not.

A lot of food for thought here so well done.

For the love of God I hope they do not go anywhere near Bertuzzi.

Hall has injury concerns and didnt perform well this past season. Add in he controls where he goes, if anywhere, and that price drops considerably as there isnt a bidding party. Being cap stapped is far from irrelevant. Teams with cap are holding teams without cap hostage right now to move players (especially underperforming ones).

I wanted to include OEL but I actually forgot to do so.

I agree. Hall isn't a cap dump at all. In fact he has a lot of value imo. A team really going for it might be willing to trade a 1st (a late 1st) to acquire him. With two years left on his deal, he makes a ton of sense for a lot of teams including the Bruins if they do not re-sign Bertuzzi.

What injury concerns? He missed time in 2023 and before that his next year missing significant time was 2019. The "didn't perform well this past season" take is simply looking at a stat line without having any context as to his season. A season in which they asked him to drive the 3rd line because of their depth at LW (DeBrusk a LW was playing RW., that's how deep they were) and wouldn't you know it, his linemates (Trent Frederic & Charlie Coyle) has arguably their best all around seasons of their careers. In the playoffs Hall was tied for the team lead in goals and was tied for 3rd in points.....while also not sitting on the top powerplay unit.

Now lets move onto the next comment which was "he controls where he goes".....this is also wrong. Hall has a 10 team NTC this year and next year, so really he doesn't control where he goes. He can certainly be strategic about who he puts on his NTC, but lets not act like he has a full NMC. Now for the cap point. The Bruins can clear 5-6 million just by moving out Reilly & Forbort via trade or buyout. They can move out Grz whose a positive asset and a $3.7 million hit. They can move out Ullmark who also is a positive asset and likely the Vezina winner. He carries a $5 million cap hit. Just in those 4 players there is about $13-$14 million in cap space.

The Bruins have multiple avenues to clear cap space if need be. A 2nd + 3rd for Hall is a discounted rate. A guy who can play in the top 6 and play at a 50-60 point pace is easily worth a 1st + prospect.

I actually really like a lot of things you did here, the signings are good and the guys u traded for/away are good too

CAR and NJD returns might be a bit optimistic, maybe prospect + 2nd/3rd for Ullmark

Also Lysell is far from NHL ready unfortunately so theyd have to fill that hole next to Marchand and Bergy. Perhaps trading Grz and use that money to help with that

Overall very well done though
