Yes but sign and trades are only done because the receiving team is paying for the 8th year of term since they can't sign them to an 8 year deal after a trade. That is not the case with Nylander

That is an inaccurate statement, sign and trades also happen in a scenario like this where the player has a year remaining on their deal and to add incentive, the team signs the player prior to trading or the receiving team has had discussions with the agent and know a deal is likely - Calgary fans should know this, see Matthew Tkachuk

Brodie is going to bounce back, I think it's clear he was injured in the playoffs and last half of the season. But they really need a couple big bruisers back there. As much as I hate it, it's necessary come playoff time. But you don't move Nylander to get a depth defenceman.

Absolutely agree but the roster still needs improvement. When you have a deep enough team, you leave a lot less up to chance, see the last two cup winners (I realized Vegas was way over the cap). Leafs need another top 4 defenseman, ideally a 2C (or top 6 winger) and better scoring depth. This can be achieved without moving any of the big guys but would certainly make it easier
