Description
In this second of a four part series, I'm examining major additions the Kraken could make to their roster via trade ahead of their third season.

Trade Target: Travis Konecny, RW, Philadelphia Flyers

Fit with Seattle: Konecny's a legitimate top six winger who averaged over a point per game last year. While Seattle is incredibly deep in the forward department, a sniper like Konecny would give them a serious boost in the goalscoring department and allow Burakovsky to slide back over to his natural side on the left wing. Since the Kraken have so many forwards, one would have to be moved out just to clear roster space. To me, Sprong is the most likely one to be traded. A good depth scorer whose defense is improved but still not his strong suit, I'd imagine there'd be interest from teams looking to boost their own scoring output.

Making the money work: Konecny has an affordable enough contract that trading away a forward would be enough to fit his cap hit onto the roster, once all of Seattle's RFAs are accounted for. However, they wouldn't have much room to bolster the defense if this happened. They could roll with some combination of Cale Fleury, Jaycob Megna, and prospect Ryker Evans to fill the defense spot vacated by Soucy. Another option is to pursue outside help, most likely a proven veteran to hold down the fort until Evans is ready. Driedger and his contract would have to be moved out to facilitate this, likely via buyout or with a sweetener attached. To model this potential scenario, I traded Driedger and added Forbort from Boston.

Let me know your thoughts and if any of the trade values need to be adjusted. Helpful feedback is always appreciated! Go Kraken and Go Firebirds!

  4. 2024 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Seattle has some promising prospects, but as a two-year old franchise their prospect pool is still shallow, so I don't know how willing they would be to deal from it. Francis's trading MO has always been to trade draft picks for players instead of prospects or current roster pieces, so this fits. With Philadelphia heading into a rebuild, picks 20 and 52 this year along with second and third round picks next year will help them restock their future talent pipeline.

Conditional; Seattle will receive the lower of Carolina's two 2024 second round picks.
CAR
  1. Sprong, Daniel [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Adding in Konecny means Seattle needs to clear a spot in the lineup, and Sprong is the most likely candidate. Carolina seems like a team that could use a scorer like him, but in this hypothetical scenario Seattle could trade Sprong to any team looking to boost their goalscoring.

    Future Considerations
    PHI
    1. Driedger, Chris
    2. 2024 3rd round pick (SEA)
    Additional Details:
If Seattle added a big money upgrade at forward, they could just roll with their internal options to replace Soucy. However, if they wanted to bring in additional outside help for the blue line, some cap space would have to be cleared in this scenario. I don't love trading away a draft pick just to shed Driedger's salary, but it may prove necessary. FYI, this could be to any rebuilding team looking to take on salary to gain more draft capital.
    4.
    BOS
    1. 2024 7th round pick (CGY)
    Additional Details:
The premise of this is Seattle trades for Forbort to get a penalty killing LD who can serve as a veteran stopgap until Evans is ready, and Boston gets some badly needed cap space to help field a complete roster next year. The return could be anything from a late-round pick to Future Considerations depending on how much of a market there is for Forbort.

Sprong would be ok, but he’s not playing in the top 6, and they won’t pay a RFA top dollar for a career year to only play 11 mins per night. Pass.

That’s not getting TK. A bunch of mid picks in each round aren’t doing it.

I don't think the value for TK is insane, but contract wise and his output I just think someone out there will pay more, in the area of two 1sts. So for that reason I wouldnt bet on this happening

I've been pondering how to land Konecny in Seattle too, here's my attempt: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4330762
Ultimately I think someone else will put together a bigger package than the Kraken can offer.
