Reasonable return if Calgary thinks Hanifin is going to leave anyway when his contract runs out. A mid-1st this year could be pretty good, and getting back a young roster player too is important because I don't think Calgary wants to rebuild now. Not having to retain salary gives them some flexibility to make other moves. Good for Pittsburgh too as they try to get back into the playoffs while Crosby et al are still going strong, and if Hanifin turns out to be a good fit, maybe they can convince him to stay.
