Puljujarvi being included is irrelevant. He's neither an asset nor a liability, because he's not going to get a qualifying offer. They'd just be trading for the right to negotiate with him for a week before he becomes a UFA.

Guentzel has only one year left on his contract, then he can become a UFA, so I don't think his trade value without salary retention is more than an NHL-ready prospect and a presumably late 1st-round pick. That doesn't necessarily mean Pittsburgh will trade him for that, but if they decide to trade him, that's probably pretty close to what they'll get.

Now I got it! That makes sense. Sorry I misunderstood what you meant.

If PIT did want to Guentzel for some reason, it would be a good time to Petry, Petterrsson or Ruuta for a better, younger & (hopefully) cheaper Dman. Even Pesce if he he would resign would be a better fit.

I have to respectfully disagree. Your point is valid about the 1 year left on the deal reducing his value, but he is still a top winger on almost every team in the league. Even though winners fetch traditionally lower returns than Dmen or Centers, I still see him returning more than that. Most likely a second higher pick and a second solid prospect - unless Dubas sees Drury higher level than we realize

Pesce for Guentzel would not be unreasonable since both have one year left on their contracts. I wouldn't mess with the top 4 defensemen if I was Carolina though. They may be forced to do so next summer, but they want to win the cup this coming season, and that's the strength of their team. Yes, they want to bring in a goal scorer, but they don't want to solve one problem by creating another. Drury and a 1st they might do.

No disagreement on Guentzel's ability -- he's a great player and probably just what Carolina needs -- I'm just thinking about what teams have been getting when they trade a one-year rental. It may be even more difficult to get good value this year because it looks like there may be a lot of high-scoring one-year rentals available. If Pittsburgh wants to get back in the playoffs while Crosby et al are still going strong, they would probably be better to keep him, at least until the deadline when they may be able to get a better return if they retain half of his salary.

I was a little surprised that Drury didn't make the team out of training camp this past season, but he was a regular in the playoffs, and from what I hear he's still a highly regarded prospect. Of course, different teams will have different opinions of him, so maybe he's not the guy Dubas wants, but Carolina might have somebody else he could grab instead. It won't be anybody like Seth Jarvis though.
