Genuine question: is this not illegal now? If not, go for it!

I think they can get it approved. The issue is Krug not wanting to waive his NTC, not STL trying to circumvent the cap. I believe WSH also had the new deal with Orpik equivalent to whatever he would have made had he not been bought out, so the actual amount paid to Krug would be the same, just from two different sources

A team can't trade a player for buyout purposes, And then resign that player for a cheaper deal. It's called cap circumvention and it's illegal per the new CBA.

What part of the CBA dictates that? I was having trouble finding that on here and they extended the current CBA which allowed it. I may be misunderstanding the logistics of it.

i believe the rule is they arent eligible until the following season. If they bought out Krug now (the 22-23 season), STL would be eligible to sign him come July 1st, the start of the 23-24 season.

I'm not quite sure exactly where it's at, just know that they said that trades then buyouts and resigning players for cheap was no longer allowed.

Wouldn't that only apply to Philadelphia since they were the team that bought him out? For Orpik, the team that bought him out wasn't able to resign him, which would have been Colorado

I just don't know where that is since they extended the CBA back in 2020, which allowed for this process to happen. I don't see anything about them ratifying something new outside of the CBA however. Anyways, it's just an interesting thought experiment to make the deal work

Briere will already be retaining on Kevin Hayes and possibly Deangelo. So i'm pretty sure the last thing he wants is 8 years of dead money on Torey Krug on the book.

For an extra 2 2nd round picks I'd do it. Hopefully someone like FLA or SEA is interested in Krug

Flyers are rebuilding, they aren't buying out Krug EVEN if he changed his mind about accepting a trade there. It's not logical and won't happen.

Once a retained salary transaction has occurred, there are various limitations, such as:

A team cannot reacquire a player whom they have retained salary from for a minimum of one year after the date of the transaction, or unless the player's contract expires or is terminated prior to the one-year date.
All teams involved in a retained salary transaction will have cap implications if the contract is bought out or terminated.
Teams who retain salary on a players contract, will have the full value of the cap hit act against the teams salary cap total, regardless of whether the player is reassigned to the minors by their current team.

Krug won't come with any retained salary. They would absorb his full contract and then buy him out.
