Cap Casualty Thoughts

Created by: pens1991
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins

Description
Dubas mentioned teams that are up against the cap as possible targets for trades

This is just a thread of some players I see as potential targets for what Dubas was referring to.
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
  2. Ullmark, Linus
Additional Details:
I know Boston just moved Hall, but they still have to open up more room assuming they're going to sign Swayman and Bertuzzi (seems like Orlov probably isn't staying) + Others. Roster size currently at 14 with just under $11M in cap
BOS
2.
PIT
  1. Addison, Calen [RFA Rights]
  2. Steel, Sam [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I'm guessing that Minnesota wants to bring both guys back but they're another team under cap crunch. 16 roster spots currently with $8M in cap, i'm not sure who they can move currently that has a cap hit
MIN
3.
PIT
  1. Arvidsson, Viktor
Additional Details:
with the PLD announced, the Kings have 16 roster spots with only $4.5M in space. Still need to sign a starting goalie + F and D depth. Arvidsson has 1 year left and seems like a possible move at $4.25M
LAK
4.
PIT
  1. Beauvillier, Anthony
  2. Boeser, Brock
  3. Garland, Conor
Additional Details:
Not sure i'd consider these guys cap dumps persay, but could be casualties on a team that needs more cap space.
VAN
5.
PIT
  1. Carrier, William
  2. Marchessault, Jonathan
  3. McNabb, Brayden
  4. Stephenson, Chandler
Additional Details:
With the reported new deal for hill at $4.9M x 2 that leaves the knights with $4.3M in space with 20 players signed. Multiple questions. If Lehner comes back off LTIR he wipes out all their current cap space and puts the team over the cap.

As their roster stands they only have 2 RD (Pietrangelo and Whitecloud) and a log jam on the left side.

I imagine McNabb and Martinez would be piece to move as they'd want to keep the younger Hague, no desire for penguins to take on Martinez. (also have Cormier in the minors on the left side)

Team needs to sign some forward depth too, not sure who could be an odd casualty here but just guessing.

**i don't think they would move Marchessault, but he's in his final year and at 5M hit they may want to move now to get a return before letting him walk**

lol. Not a single Vegas player you mentioned is going to get traded this offseason. Also, we don't have a log jam on the left side. Theo plays on the right with McNabb. The only guy who could be a cap casualty this offseason would be Martinez.

i wasn't sure if any of them played opposite side but figured that could be true so honestly wasn't sure.

I don't know Lehner's status, but if he comes of LTIR that creates an issue for Vegas unless they can move him or Martinez, but I can't see anyone taking Lehner unless there is retention, and both Lehner and Martinez have M-NTCs so feel its a bit more tricky. vegas could pull up AHL depth, but assume they also want to resign Howden? Can't imagine they bring Barbashev back unless they move cap.

Garland is likely the only guy you will get. Won't cost much to acquire, but won't be a dump

Hence why i said Casualty.

I only threw in Brock because I felt like all last season VAN fans were trying to move him. Picked Beauviller because he has one year left.

If they are 20 somethings and don't have trade protection for the next 8 years I'll consider them

I think the current plan is for Lehner to be placed on LTIR. Assuming they sign Hill to something in the 4.9 ballpark they're going to be forced to trade someone if they want to bring back Barbashev. It would most likely be Martinez. In that case, they'll have to sign a winger for Eichel and Marchy as well as a LD to play with Petro. I'm very interested to see how it all plays out.

was kind of my thought with Vegas needing to move cap, sort or weak on the top 6 LW side (IMO)

When it comes to the Bruins situation, I think Dubas should try the Georgiev offer on Swayman (2nd, 3rd, and 5th) and see if Boston bites.

Completely agree. It will only be amplified if they lose Barbie. I'm sure they have something creative up their sleeve. They always do!

i get that Ullmark just won the Vezina but I just can't see them moving Swayman... I think they'll try and keep both honestly but i'm not sure.

yeah i'm sure they do. Will cost a pretty penny to keep Barbashev I would assume. Two solid seasons back-to-back and a big impact in the playoffs this year.

Canucks seem to be ok with letting Boeser have a bounce back season. No point in selling low on him when he is a pretty good player

Wellp, I didn't have Smith on the list, but that makes sense to bring Barb back!
